The Rudewood

Although one of the smaller forests of Rohagi, the Rudewood has nevertheless earned its reputation for Rockmilk. Being a bastion of nature in an increasingly urban world, the Rudewood is notorious for being difficult to tame. The verdant trees of the forest tend to grow back with a vengeance when felled, making it a challenge to claim farmland or real estate from the woodlands. As such, there are relatively few humans who call the Rudewood home, and only a few outsider villages exist within its confines – and those tend to be on the outskirts of the forest. The forest is far from deserted, though. As the ancestral home of the hotchi, a great many hedgehog-folk dwell within the Rudewood, primarily living in small, close-knit communities.

As a rule, hotchi are very tolerant of outsiders, but are usually more than happy to remain at home. A fair few stiltspear have also colonized the forest’s southern regions. The northern reaches of the Rudewood abut New Crobuzon itself. This stretch of the forest went untouched for years, but the new Grande Tramway cuts through the edges of the forest as it leaves the city. One might imagine that the unclaimed woods near the city would be rife with vagrants, but wild predators and a scarcity of edible plants temper this notion
