Many are hailed as heroes, filling the history books with their names and deeds. But there are others whose deeds, out of necessity, must be kept in the shadows, even when the impact of those deeds is felt long after their death.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Refrim was quite healthy overall, although later in life he suffered occasionally from stiffness of the joints.

Identifying Characteristics

Refrim had a small triangular birthmark on the left side of his neck. He also acquired a nasty-looking scar that ran from about the middle of his forearm up over his elbow.

Physical quirks

He had a habit of tugging on his hair when he was deep in thought.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Refrim's father was half-elven, his mother human. He rarely saw his father once he got into his teens, so he spent most of his time with his mother, who was a cleric of the goddess Hidhania. She taught him the ways of her goddess, and instilled in him a great love of learning.
While Refrim was somewhat interested in the worship of Hidhania, he rejected the idea of serving her directly by becoming a cleric as his mother wished. Instead, he took up the mantle of sage. By the time he was twenty-five, he was traveling frequently, picking up knowledge whenever and wherever he could.
Upon returning home from one of his journeys, one of the clerics with whom his mother worked informed him of his mother's death at the hands of a fiend. She had been struck down while helping a young slave that the devil was harassing, and her body destroyed as an example to others.
Refrim was overcome with guilt, wondering if he would have been able to help his mother if he hadn't wandered away. Knowing that clerics were frequently targeted by fiends if they were tolerated at all, he wanted to find a way to help shelter those that he could and help them in their endeavors.
After giving it a great deal of thought, Refrim proposed the construction of a university and library. Knowing that the devils found knowledge, and the pursuit thereof, a valuable asset, he correctly believed that they would allow the existence of this place of knowledge.
However, he had more in mind than simply what was seen on the surface. Many discussions took place with the clerics of Hidhania about a secret place beneath the university that would contain a grand temple to the goddess as well as serving as a hiding place for slaves and others with reasons to avoid the fiends. The magic of Hidhania would mask the existence of this enclave, and those who ran it would be responsible for finding those who needed aid and giving it.
Refrim served as the leader of the university for over two decades after construction had finished, and he made many connections throughout Bastarre with those who were willing to help. When he finally named a successor as head of the university, he lived his final days actively helping those in the community beneath Senzicus, finally succumbing to his age after nearly another decade had passed.

Education

Self-taught using any sort of books and scrolls he could find. He was interested in any subject and learned quite quickly, becoming one of the most well-rounded sages in the history of Bastarre.

Accomplishments & Achievements

He was the first head of the Great University of Senzicus, having helped plan its construction, the stocking of its library, and he also served as one of the many teachers.

Intellectual Characteristics

Refrim had an eidetic memory, and never forgot anything that he ever read or learned. His mind was logical, but also quite creative, so that he could glean information that others might not be able to.

Morality & Philosophy

Refrim believed in freedom and in helping anyone who needed it. He would go to great lengths to find ways to help anyone in a bad situation; and didn't believe in being compensated for helping.
