Tyrantass

The skeletal Tyrantasses were large, spirit-driven war machines, developed in the Third Ellypse by the Spectral Church as part of a counteroffensive in the Second Catavarran War. Their intricate, surprisingly sturdy networks of interlocking metal arms and canvas sails formed a kind of kinetic sculpture that served both as a cage and as a means of transportation for the enraged wind spirit trapped inside the mechanisms. These horrifying contraptions were then affixed with a host of steel blades, light as a feather and razor-sharp. Upon being released into the grand expanses of the Great Catavarran Desert, the machines did an incredible job of sowing death and destruction across the battlefield, stopping the advance of the northern imperials in its tracks. However, Tyrantasses were just as deadly to the Bastollan infantry. More often than not, these foot soldiers were not informed about the deployment of these horrifying windborne cavalries, only becoming aware of their presence when it was far too late.
The development and subsequent deployment of the Tyrantass legions by the Spectral Church is often thought to be the most emblematic examples of how the Spectral Church prevented the total defeat of Bastollo by resorting to 'unconventional' tactics that enabled them to outmaneuver the northern imperials. They leveraged their immense reality-warping powers in concert with clandestine political manipulation to bring several spiritual weapons to the battlefront, bypassing the military brass. This enabled them to deploy weapons grade miasms, and waves of blazingly fast war machines like the Tyrantass Legions with total surprise. Though they often ate into the Bastollan forces, the Tyrantasses were hideously effective in pushing the line, allowing incoming waves of infantry to recover lost territory.
However, the casualties upon either end of the conflict incurred via these ramshackle legions of death were not without their lasting consequences, as each bloody death and brutal maiming contributed to the horrific tales told by soldiers on the front of the giant hellspider hordes that seemed to strike without warning, leaving nothing but total mayhem in their wake. This downright apocalyptic reputation led to the birth of the Tyrants, one of the most feared spirits throughout the history of Bastollo.
