Mr Squiggle started "life" as the imaginary friend of Tyler Jamison. Little Ty created the bizarre, green man to keep him company and entertain him during a lonely time in his life, and the two got into a lot of mischief together. The young Tyler would often blame Mr Squiggle for any trouble he'd get in, and doubtless no-one quite realised just how true that was.
The exact point at which Mr Squiggle changed from a being of pure imagination to a manifestation of reality-warping power is not entirely clear, but the first time he manifested was a doozy.
