Personal history
Kindnapped from his family at a young age and put through a gruelling series of torturous challenges by the "The Mountainside Maniac", Manitou was the final survivor of the ordeal, having watched and participated in the deaths of several of his fellow victims and been irreparably changed by the experience. At the height of his punishment, Manitou had been starved near the point of death and, seeing no other means of survival, had found nourishment in the flesh of his cohort. This act of desperation afforded him the strength he needed to survive, but brought the curse of the Wendigo down upon him.
He was saved from his imprisonment when the Maniac decided that he'd failed one of his arbitrary tests, but found himself ill at ease in returning to the civilised world. Within a year, the curse would take hold. Manitou found himself suffering from an irresistable craving for raw and unprocessed meat, and Elderkin Village was rocked by a blizzard that got progressively stronger as the year went on.
Within a few months, Manitou was going out at night, killing those he could find and feating on their flesh, his sense of morality gone and his humanity soon with it. Fairly quickly, due to the murders and the endless blizzard, the village was abandoned, leaving Manitou up on the mountain alone and suffering from a hunger that could not be sated.
It was years before anyone else set foot in the village, but unfortunately for Manitou it wasn't any hapless moutaineer that encroached upon his territory, but Combat, a highly-trained expert in taking down beings far stronger than himself. The villain was able to trick him in his feral state into a trap couched within a nearby mine, trapping him in there and magically sealing him inside.
Manitou's end would come a few months later, when Combat and B-Team lured him back to the Maniac's shack and blew him up with a series of shrapnel bombs, before Combat completed a ritual, freeing his soul of the curse and allowing him to finally find some measure of peace.
