Anteus (Ahn-TAY-us)

Anteus, god of the forge, is the deity of craftspeople the world over. They encourage hard work, dedication, and mastery of a craft. Unique among the gods, shrines and temples to Anteus are not places of quiet reflection or solitary prayer. The forge god's places of worship are more often public craft spaces, dedicated to one or more trades common in the settlement they serve. In Bobbingdenn, for instance, the temple to Anteus is an enormous tinker's laboratory with all manner of arcane and technological projects ongoing at any given time. Abandoned projects are marked appropriately and are available for adoption or parts reclamation by other worshipers at any time.

Divine Domains

Lady Anteus is the god of craftspeople in general, anyone who works with their hands, isn't afraid to get dirty, and puts in hours of work each day will find themselves under her gaze. Lord Anteus is somewhat more particular, preferring specifically those who work with hammer and steel and fire. Blacksmiths, armorers, bladesmiths, farriers, silver, copper, pewter, or tinsmiths, and any of the variety of other professions centered around the forge itself count him as their patron. Clerics of Anteus pursue the forge domain, and paladins dedicated to the god swear oaths of devotion or conquest.

Holy Books & Codes

Lord and Lady Anteus prefer their devotees to spend time working rather than reading scripture, and so neither have laid down holy texts as such. However, the Church of Anteus has created a number of manuals, procedurals, and workbooks which various craftspeople treat with much the same reverence as other faiths treat their scriptures.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Lady Anteus is represented by a pair of work-worn hands holding the tools of a trade. On the outside of a temple, her symbol often indicates what is inside. A temple dedicated to weavers' crafts might have the Lady's hands cradling a spool of thread or a miniature loom, while a temple whose focus is woodworking might show them gripping a wood chisel or saw.  Lord Anteus is uniformly represented by a hammer striking an anvil. In years past, the fashion was to depict both as heavily ornamented and beautiful, but recently such decorations are seen as antithetical to Lord Anteus's general preference for simple, solid work.

Tenets of Faith

  • If you want something done right, do it yourself
  • True mastery of a craft is the highest praise you can offer your makers
  • The divines look with joy on the works of your hands
  • Glory in the moment of creation, for it is then that you are closest to your god
  • Lady Anteus:
  • Hard work and dedication are the path to salvation
  • Sweat can wash away all sins
  • Claim as your own only that which you create
  • Lord Anteus:
  • In fire and steel are true men forged
  • If you set out to do something, be sure it's done well
  • A smith whose tools are never tested is no smith at all
  • Holidays

Anteus is celebrated at the height of summer, when the sun's heat beats down like a hammer on an anvil. The summer solstice festival is a divinely blessed market day in which craftsmen of all stripes share their creations with others in a grand parade of artistic and useful items.
