Meean (MEE-an)

The god of knowledge, Meean is a scholar of the multiverse and a teacher without equal. They are the god who gave mortals the power of speech and, later, the gift of writing. It is under their tutelage that mankind learned to cook, to build, and to think. They also taught the races of man to scheme, plot, and hoard information away from others, whether for power or for protection. Their male aspect is the teacher, the great sharer of knowledge who passes on the will of the gods in the form of divination. Their female aspect is the Lady of Whispers, and few outside of her priesthood know any more about her.

Divine Domains

Lord Meean is the god of libraries, education, divination, and the sharing of information. He presides over schools of all sorts, apprenticeships, and research endeavors. He guides mapmaking expeditions and sends sparks of inspiration to the minds of scholars deep in study. Lady Meean is the goddess of hidden things and secrets, spoken of in hushed tones as the Lady of Whispers. She is the place where dangerous knowledge goes, never to be seen again. Her priesthood are perpetually masked and hooded, and all go by assumed names, so that no one may know their identities. Clerics of Meean follow the domain of knowledge, and paladins swear many oaths, but mainly oaths of devotion.

Holy Books & Codes

Lord Meean has inspired countless works of brilliant scholarship, but his central text is The Learner's Book. An enormously complex treatise discussing the intellectual development of various humanoid races, different modes of learning, and best pedagogical practices. Lady Meean's followers answer no questions about their holy secrets, but there are whispers of a Tome of Unknowledge that scars the minds of those who read it so deeply that they are forever struck silent by the experience. Of course the priests deny it, but as silence is part of their code, who can tell what the truth is?

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Lord Meean is represented by an open book, usually with writing on the pages. Lady Meean is represented by a closed book, usually locked with a visible mechanism.

Tenets of Faith

  • Knowledge is more precious than any material good
  • The path to greater understanding and the path to power are one and the same
  • The most difficult things to discover are those most worth knowing
  • Never stop learning
  • Lord Meean:
  • The ability to teach is the proof of true understanding
  • All knowledge should be shared with others
  • To know the will of the gods, first know yourself
  • Lady Meean:
  • Holidays

Meean's Day, the first day of the seventh month, is the beginning of the new school year for children all across the Chatia Empire. For people of all ages, it is a day spent in quiet, solitary study, particularly of an area which intrigues the individual but which they don't often get the chance to spend time learning about. On this day, the libraries of the Imperium are filled with curious folk pursuing their interests. It usually falls at the very beginning of autumn.
