Pholir (FOE-leer)

Pholir is the god of twilight, guardian of rest and old age. They keep watch against the creatures which prey on unwary mortals from the shadows where the sun's light does not shine, and grant peace to those who take advantage of their gift of sanctuary. Their female aspect is the goddess that stands vigilant throughout the night, guarding the mortal world from the darkness beyond the stars. Their male aspect is the Lord of Rest, who guides dreamers out of nightmares and restores the vitality of all creatures as they sleep.

Divine Domains

Lady Pholir is the goddess of vigilance, protection, and sanctuary. She can be seen at the side of Lord Coias as he purges impurities from the world, and he can be found shining at her back as she chases away horrors beyond imagining from the fringes of our reality. Lord Pholir is the god of rest, renewal, and old age. In our nightly quest for rejuvenation and in that last, long sleep before we cross the celestial waves to join the gods in heaven, Lord Pholir is our guide. He is often shown sharing a meal with Zoas, making peace with the inevitability of final rest.  Clerics of Pholir are clerics of the twilight domain, and paladins swear oaths of devotion or oaths of the watchers.

Holy Books & Codes

Lady Pholir's will can be found on the Runic Seals, which are transcribed by her priesthood across a series of books called the Seals of Reality. The texts are largely dedicated to the maintenance of the Four Seals as established during the Age of Heroes, but the Lady's instructions regarding defense against incursions from other planes of existence are clearly outlined. Lord Pholir sends his messages through the minds of dreamers, deep in the most peaceful slumber of their lives. Often, he speaks through aging elves as their trances begin to feel more like the sleep other mortals experience. His priesthood records these prophecies and instructions in The Empyrean Tomes, which are read and interpreted by each High Priest as he enters office.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Lady Pholir is represented by the image of the moon Soma, our sentinel against the darkness of night. Most often, she is a waxing crescent. Lord Pholir is represented by a winged star, as he brings light and relief on soundless wings to sleepers across the world.

Tenets of Faith

  • Fear not the night, for you are protected
  • There is no price you must pay before you are allowed to rest
  • Dreams can carry meaning, watch for the signs
  • Darkness is the natural state of the universe, light is a gift
  • Lady Pholir:
  • Vigilance against that which is unnatural
  • Sanctuary from the wild dark
  • Righteousness is the weapon of the watchers
  • Lord Pholir:
  • Sleep brings peace unknown in waking life
  • Age comes with wisdom and should be respected
  • Mortals cannot outrun the clock; surrender to it
  • Holidays

The last day of the fourteenth month, which marks the ending of the year, is Pholir's day of celebration. The day is spent like any other, but the moment the sun begins to set, quiet falls over the cities of the faithful. All watch in silence until the last glimmer of daylight fades, and then the festivities begin. Until the dawning of the next day, the world is held to be suspended between one year and the next, and many take this opportunity to celebrate by getting roaring drunk and doing things that they can't be held liable for afterwards. Notably, crimes that involve harm to property or other people are still punishable, but misdemeanors such as illicit fireworks, public indecency, minor vandalism, mutually agreed-upon brawling, and criminal mischief are generally allowed to go on uninterrupted.
