Laws of the Folkvargr

Folkvargr Law is short, and simple. They are not a complicated people, and their way of life does not lend itself to complex social rules. Whilst individual disputes on other matters may be brought forward for trial, or recompense, the following are the cornerstone of the law.

Though there is a law councillor, the Karl is expected to sit in judgement over disputes within the clan which involve punishments including death and banishment. The law councillor is always present to give advice for when this is needed.

Stealing from the Folkvargr

  • You must pay Wergild (compensation) to those wronged.

Two times over for first offence, (i.e. three shards are stolen, six must be paid back.)
Something of greater value can be given as appeasement instead.

  • To be caught again holds greater consequences.

The perpetrator may be banished, or declared a thief: and will be given a token to this symbolise this. This will affect the person’s ability to walk freely through shops, and can result in being charged a higher price in trade.

  • • If a theft is large enough the first offence may be the banishment or service.
  • Killing of a Folkvargr

  • You will be tried by Folkvargr council members, and blood eagled if found guilty.

For the establishment of guilt trial by combat is available and is considered honourable. This gives them the chance to win their right to live. Another person may NOT fight in their stead, unless the accused is a child.

  • This fight is not to the death, but to unconsciousness via blood loss.
  • If the accused loses, they are then blood eagled.
  • For anyone under the age of 18, an adult who is responsible for them will be tried in their stead. If combat is chosen over trial, the accused adult will be blood eagled if they lose, in place of the child.

    Destruction of the land

  • The person must bring a suitable offering to take to the temples to ask for the Gods forgiveness.
  • The person must also help to fix the issue they have caused. Be that cleaning the water or planting trees. (Community Service)
  • Failure to do so will cause the person to be declared a destroyer, and will be given a token to this symbolise this: this may affect their ability to trade for resources as they have not respected them in the first place.
  • Disrespect for the dead

  • Anyone caught disrespecting the dead will be publicly scolded and sent to the temple to apologise to their departed soul, and to the Gods.

This includes mutilation and improper disposal (burial – the dead should be burned so that they cannot return.)

  • Repeated disrespect will incur increased wergild costs, up to banishment.
