A Rescue in the Fungal Breach
General Summary
June 29-30 - Blake, N’laive “Ladybird” Hogsworthy, Simon, & Feldkhan (NPC)
Party headed out to the Endless Party
Met with Chie, who was speaking with some treants
Treants had been summoned to help out Lilissia, an Anhana who had been playing keep-away with a group of undead invading from the hills to the west, in an attempt to keep them from recovering a magical key to a barrow.
Treants said that they had felt some of their brothers slowly going insane, and that they were wary of venturing into the forest, in case it would spread. Chie asked the group to go check on Lilissia, and on the treants who had joined her.
Party spent the night, then at dawn headed in, escorted by Sharrasp, a Banelight and met a pair of treants who were visibly infected with fungal growths, battling each other. Upon seeing the party, they convinced one to stop, though it was very confused, but the other abruptly turned its anger on them. They successfully managed to defeat (though not kill) the second, and purged the worst of the infection from both, ordering them to head back to the party for proper healing.
Moving deeper in, they made contact with Lilissia, and discovered that she, too, had been infected with some sort of fungus that was making her lose focus, though she was nowhere near as badly affected as the treants. After interviewing her about what was out there, they learned that a tomb near the forest's edge was likely the base of the leader of the undead, and then ordered her to return to the Endless Party for some R&R.
Moving into the cleared area of the forest, they came across a group of undead guards, all of which had some sort of fungal growth upon them. Some even seemed to have "flesh" made entirely of fungus, and were acting more like tougher-than-normal zombies, even in one case being able to spew acidic spores at distant targets. Though some of the party was wounded in the fight, they quickly recovered and began searching for the tomb that Lilissia had spoken of.
Eventually they found it, surrounded by a large swathe of upturned earth that the party could tell held many undead, hiding from the sun. Sneaking past the mounds, the party headed into the tomb and left Sharrasp to deal with any creatures who woke up, a job that she seemed to relish.
Within the tomb, they found a wight, calling herself "Lethna, servant of Hiogrith," tending to (perhaps training, or feeding?) a massive ooze-like monster formed from fungal flesh and spores. When the fungal abomination was slain, Lethna made a comment about it being a waste of time to grow the thing if it was going to be so weak. Eventually, after striking Simon down with a massive blow, leaving a wound in his chest that oozed spectral smoke, Lethna was herself slain. Her arms and armor were taken, along with another icon bearing a symbol of a four-jawed Wurm.
After getting Simon back onto his feet, the party headed back up to the surface. There, surrounded by a powerful stench of ozone, they found a mass of destroyed undead and an exhausted but very happy Sharrasp. Heading back to the Endless Party, they told Chie about what they'd found, dropped off some samples of the fungal growths they'd collected for him to use in making an antidote or vaccine against it, and then headed back to town.
