Burakari, The Blade of Blind Rage
"If you know the Demon's name, I'd suggest you forget it. It'll forever haunt us if you don't." - Mushita resident
The Blade of Blind Rage
Legends speak of a blade of unholy fire hidden within the land of Karriatto. They speak of warriors turned mad upon a single touch of the sword, lost in a frenzy only ended by death. Those who wish to wield this sword must be of strong will and withstand the hate that seeps into the mind through the charred metal. This weapon is known as Burakari, the Blade of Blind Rage, a katana made of charred black metal with unknown symbols carved into the blade. A warm red leather is wrapped around the hilt of the sword. Once unsheathed, flames will creep along the blade and up the wielder's arm, although their skin will not be burned. Warriors that hold the blade will have their minds taken over by an overwhelming desire to kill everyone in their path. The only way one can be freed from this bloodlust is by the end of another's sword. The origins of the sword are unknown, although rumors claim that it originates from a world beyond Nostrina, from a realm of eternal fire and hatred. If these claims are valid, it would mean that the Aeunta known as Immora, created the weapon. This would also explain the weapon's purpose: to siphon souls from both the weapon's victims and its wielder to sustain Immora's power. The Scorned Demon of Mushita
Simply saying the name Matsaka Iyona brings out fear in the hearts and minds of the people in the Mushita Valley in northeastern Karriatto. Those who remember the slaughter that smothered the valley in blood and ash have long since departed this world. Local folktales claim that the screams of those killed in the massacre can be heard on quiet nights when one clears their mind. Residents of the valley have since forgotten the name of the monster who brought death to their land. They believe that even uttering the demon's name will unleash her wrath once again. The early life of Matsaka Iyona is unknown, though some believe that she is a bastard child from the early Shungiku dynasty, placing her birth somewhere between 410 to 430 1E. Nothing is known of her childhood, though her skill with the sword leads most to think that the ones who raised her were trained warriors themselves. The possibility that she was a Shijiken warrior has been has been brought up after documents stolen from the organization's archives were found that listed Matsaka Iyona as one of their members. Shijiken officials have disputed these claims, stating that they have no records of her within their organization and the stolen documents were forged. The first sighting of Matsaka was in the town of Nakasekki, a small town that runs along the river banks. Residents claim she kept to herself during this time, focused on finding something within the valley. Despite her seemingly being obsessed with whatever she was seeking, she has kind to the townsfolk, always willing to give a helping hand when she could. She stayed in the town for a few weeks before disappearing into the night, not saying a word to anyone in Nakasekki. She would eventually return, but what came back wasn't the Matsaka they once knew. Her arm burned like a funeral pyre, her eyes were soulless spheres of rage, and her mind was taken by bloodlust. All who crossed her path were cut down by Burakari's black metal blade. Whole towns within the valley were evacuated as she slaughtered indiscriminately, burning the world around her to the ground as she stalked the land. The refugees told stories of the horrors brought upon them. The valley became the Scorned Demon's hunting ground, a place where both the foolish and brave would meet their end. Fears of the Scorned Demon exiting Mushita spread panic among the rest of Kamiatto, dreading the destruction that would follow. Officials within the Shungiku Ministry were considering sending an army into the valley and call for support from neighboring countries to end the crisis. However, these measures were never taken, as a mysterious figure calling themselves the Saint of Dawn slew the Scorned Demon. The enigmatic Saint disappeared as quickly as they arrived, leaving many to wonder if they were perhaps sent by the gods to slay the Scorned Demon. Many of the survivors who fled Mushita refused to return to the now-ruined valley. The forests were now ash and dust; their homes were nothing more than memories. Scattered across the valley were symbols carved into the earth, and some were made with the burnt remains of the demon's victims. The body of Matsaka was found in a barren clearing with Barakari sheathed by her side. Her body was burned and her ashes were taken away from the valley. After securing the sword, the survivors attempted to destroy the sword but found that it was seemingly indestructible. They decided to seal it in a locked metal case and hid it in an undisclosed location. The ones that hid the blade made a pact to forget where they hid the blade and began to rebuild. The survivors purged her name from their memory, for the people of Karriatto believe that the name once someone who died is forgotten, they will be forever erased from this world. In the modern-day, Mushita is a vibrant place where one goes to find peace in a chaotic world. The scars inflicted by the Demon have since healed, being nothing more than stories to be passed down. The location of Barakari is forever lost, but its legacy lives on in the hearts of Mushita's people. Forever a reminder of the devastation brought upon the peaceful valley all those centuries ago.
