Clifford Tarnell, son of Tyril Tarnell and Jaqueline Thornton, is the High Earl of Lylelor. Through his sister Maria he is uncle to Edward Whitemount and was a crucial father figure to him in his upbringing.

Clifford is described as an often jovial patriarch of his house, though a stern demeanor is but a moment away. His kind eyes hide a shrewd and sometimes ruthless political mind, his wrinkled visage concealing one of the strongest figures in Eremere. He has grey wispy hair, neatly combed around the circumference of his head, while a groomed handlebar moustache graces his upper lip. He is overweight, and his health is beginning to fail him.
