Nephews' Revolt
The Nephews' Revolt was a rebellion against Varun the Usurper. The war pressed the claim of the deposed King Adair the Young, who had lost his throne to Varun some eleven years prior, in 652 EL. Leading the revolt was Adair himself as well as his bastard half-brother Ulfred Ravenwood, the only two surviving nephews of Varun, from which the war earnt its name.
Background
In the mid seventh century, the Ereman monarchy found itself in a precarious position. In 643 EL, the heir of King Midah II, Prince Beryn, had died unexpectadly. In 650, King Midah himself passed away, leaving the throne to his grandson, 11 year old Adair the Young. Many of Eremere's nobility, who also constituted the vast majority of the government at the time, grew disconcerted with this fact and begun to fear for Eremere's security. Fortunately for those unsatisfied, Prince Varun, the dead king's second son, represented another option. Ambitious and ruthless, Varun quickly garnered support for his cause both within court and within the army. Many of those he couldn't persuade he ensured he had a hook on them with which he could coerce and manipulate. Within two years, his allies had gathered and a palace coup ensued. Those loyal to the old regime were imprisoned or killed, including Lord Sentinel Sir Lorent Langworthy, and Varun had all of his nephews and nieces killed as they slept. This event, which came to be known as the Raping of the Babes, led to many within the kingdom clear of his direct influence abandon his cause by the time it had barely begun. Only two royals survived the massacre: Ulfred, a bastard of Prince Beryn, and King Adair himself. The Nephews in Hiding
Aware of the extent of King Varun's reach, the boys initially took on false names and hid their true idenities from anyone they met. It would be four years of hiding before they revealed themselves to Earl Neros Langworthy, brother of the slain lord sentinel. He was a known opponent of Varun's rule, and he was working to build a faction to push Adair's claim when the brothers came to him.
