Structure
Novice
All recruits begin as novices, a role they earn through marshal accomplishment and duelling success. Once a warden has recognised enough achievement, recruits are inducted into the Order.Warden
From here, they act as normal soldiers of the realm, leading the king's personal armies into battle. When an incumbent warden dies, retires, or is relieved of their duties for whatever reason, a replacement must be picked. Sentinels choose from the pool of novices to replace the warden. Wardens are the first rung on the ladder of leadership within the Order of Oris. They are given a placement as a protector of an earl and his earldom, sworn to do his bidding unless it contradicts with instructions from their superiors within the order, or the king himself. There are five wardens in each earldom, with one sworn to protect the earl and his household personally while the others distribute justice and keep the peace.Sentinels
Above wardens are sentinels, of which there are only five in all of Eremere. They protect the high earls and their families and coordinate the wardens within their assigned high earldom.Lord Sentinel
Finally, the leader of the organisation is the Lord Sentinel. Much like sentinels, he is the personal protector of the king and serves on his council. He also coordinates the military activity of the king's personal armies.Culture
"In the gaze of Lumar, the Lord in Purple and King of the Light,
In the gaze of Sir Oris, protector of the gods and holy paragon,
I swear to be loyal, I swear to be true, and I swear to protect and serve."
In the gaze of Sir Oris, protector of the gods and holy paragon,
I swear to be loyal, I swear to be true, and I swear to protect and serve."
- The oath made by novices in the Order of Oris
This oath is sworn by all those fortunate enough to be inducted as novices into the Order of Oris. Similar words are spoken upon becoming a warden, sentinel, and lord sentinel, with the names of the lord they are sworn to added in. Wardens, if from a noble house, must also forsake all claims to their family's assets and must swear to not act in the interests of their house.
Honour and loyalty is the centre of the ideology of the Order of Oris, so much so that the order's motto is "An Oath Broken, A Soul Destroyed." This is indicative of the belief that the breaking of the vows taken upon joining the order will damn your soul for eternity.
"I swore to serve, my lord. And I'd rather fall on my sword than break my vow."
History
Formed in 578 EL by King Midah I of Eremere, the Order of Oris was created primarily as protection for the monarch and his family. It is named for Sir Oris 'Shellskin', a legendary knight who protects the gods. Midah's father - King Biddacrow - had united Eremere and declared himself king. He was a strong ruler and a natural leader, balancing love and fear in appropriate measure. Midah, a new ruler, was keen to avoid being deposed and Eremere collapsing. Therefore, he created the Order of Oris, placing a capable and sworn knight in charge of the royal family's protection, while also sending out capable knights to defend the earls and high earls of Eremere. The knights, however, were ultimately loyal to their order and the king, and would often be used as spies or as leverage in later years.Notable Members
