While various business interests especially have always proclaimed Greenpeace to be dangerous, it got worse in the The Collapse's wake. The USA was actively polluting resources belonging to other nations. South and Central American nations were still reeling from war and soviet was trying to find stability. No one put any resources into preservationist causes.
The ones that paid attention to wildlife at all were corporations looking to create the next superfood or bioware to sell. The likes of Biotechnica were making genetics big business. But to Greenpeace, it was obvious that these corporations wanted nothing but profit and would happily destroy the planet and abuse any life on it if made them a single cent. The organisation was among the first to raise the alarm on how bio-engineered parasites were attacking crops not developed by specific corporations. But with every species lost to corporate interests, the activist group became more violent.
In recent decades, Greenpeace has bought retrofitted military equipment for guerilla warfare against those it perceives as threats to the environment. Some relics of the Fourth Corporate War became the starting point in the 2020s, but they stayed off the radar until the early 2060s.
Many of the group's attacks since have hit ECC-based corporations harder leading to the coalition branding them an active threat. They are considered a terrorist organisation almost everywhere, European nations are actttively hunting them.
While some of the organization's funding comes from anonymous donations funneled through banks in orbit, they need more extensive resources. A common tactic has become piracy. Greenpeace is better than most at navigating the dangers of the seas and can often attack ships or smaller coastal settlements for valuables. Since they stay on friendly terms with sea nomads, they can fence what they don't need.
Structure
Locations with activists form a permanent cell where members know about each other. Roving cells move between these locations and make contanct with a liason, but personal introductions are kept to a minimum in case of exposure. It's also possible for more than one permanent cell in a location, in which case members of each cell know how to contact the other cell, but only one or two members would be able to recognize anyone from a different cell.
All of this exists so that the organisation can act swiftly but without being exposed. Information can quickly be disseminated from higher up while coordination on a low level is almost impossible. When action is carried out, no part of it knows more than it needs and can therefore be kept safe. If someone excels, they are recruired to a roving cell or to a coordinating position.
