River fort
River guardian
River Fort stood on the bank of the Pale river and marked entry into the Kingdom of ....... by waterway. The main trade route from the Gnomish territories met the river at this point and followed the river to the main city. The fort served to guard against attacks on villages from river pirates and against the river fleets of the adjoining kingdom, with whom they had been at odds with for many years. It also housed the soldiers which patrolled the trade road, to keep merchants and travellers safe. It garrisoned 80 soldiers at any one time and these were done on 3 monthly rotations.A watery demise
During the earthquakes caused by the passing of The Traveller, the course of the Pale river was changed. This had unfortunate consequences for the fort, which now found itself in the centre of the broad river. The cellars and bottom floor of the fort are now completely submerged iunder water, on the second floor the water stands a bout 2 foot deep. The upper floor and roof are above the water line, though sections of the floor and walls have caved in due to structural damage to the floors beneath.New residents
A variety of river life has taken up residence in the fort now, including fish, crabs, snails, river weed and mosses. Several mating pairs of kingfishers have created nesting areas on the upper floors. The fort also serves as shelter for travellers on the river during inclement weather, though this can be risky due to possible structural instability. This doesn't deter some people though, and some regular river goers have even made ateempts at shoring up the more solid sections.
