One day when I was young, a stranger came in my village. I forgot his face, and his attire, but the one thing that I could not forget was the deep amber shade of his hair. Mommy screamed at me to not look at him in the eyes. She grabbed me and pulled me back inside the house. I remember the deathly silence that followed, only disturbed by the cocking sound of the door lock. The whole village shut as that stranger passed through. Mommy told me afterwards that it was a magical person, that I should never approach such red-haired people, as people who look at them are said to become mad. And maybe I believed her...

Historical Basis

Red-haired people have a peculiar place in society. This comes from a myth according to which they are somehow related to godly figures: In the kalendic cult, Kalendos was said to be born with a flaming red hair, and that all people who are born with similar hair color are his descendants.   For those who still fancy the old gods, red is the divine colour. Rebaari see in red-haired people the mark of a god, be it either a blessing or a curse.

This myth is common knowledge. In all regions populated by humans, redheads always seen as peculiar persons. However, Magissens however, do not have any interest in redheads.

Cultural Reception

Depending on the region and local cult, redheads are always seen as exceptional creatures, but if some people tend to show them the utmost repect and come at their service joyfully, other will avoid any contact, or even try to kill them and harvest their body parts, as they are said to hold a huge amount of power, or to be special offerings to the gods.

In Literature

Artists have always been fascinated with red-haired muses. Redheads are quite represented in poems, songs or novels, especially avter Ola Guiom's large diversity of art that included redheads.

In Art

Statues and paintings of the Rebaari gods are coloured only on the hair, with a bright red pigment. The only exceptions are for the representations of Paal, the god of Death, as it is represented with white hair.
