Dust Bunnies

In Borgalor, dust bunnies are small, vaguely rodent- or rabbit-like beings variously composed of magically charged dust, dirt, sand, ashes and such, which belong to category of creatures known as pseudofauna, meaning that they are formed by and depend on magic to survive, and lack certain characteristics to be classified as true lifeforms.
In the wild, dust bunnies tend to occur in dry regions near sources of magic, usually magic crystals or high concentrations of arcane energies or, more temporarily, where other pseudofauna- and flora or undead beings reside. They are also often found in or near crystal mines, arcane academies and wherever devices powered by magic are common, and thus have become a common sight in major towns and cities throughout Borgalor.
Most people regard dust bunnies as anything from mere nuisance to serious pests, though in recent years they have become popular as pets for children, particularly in the Southlands, central and southern Jælondis, with certain stores now selling packets of colourful sand for making custom dust bunnies.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dust bunnies start out as irregular clumps of fine particles, sometimes mixed with small pebbles and debris, which gain their characteristic rabbit-like form1 as they move around and more dust sticks to them, after which they continue growing by nibbling on dry vegetation, papyrus books- and scrolls, photographs, cardboard, cloth, canvas and such.

Genetics and Reproduction

Once a dust bunny reaches a certain size, clumps of it start falling off and eventually become animated by magic as well. If cut off from the source of magic, they revert back to piles of dust, and reanimate once a sufficient level of arcane energies is reached once more.

1The reason why they to take on this form is unknown.
