The Tetrarchy
Kmaranic: Þajor /θʌːjɔɾ/
The Tetrachy1 was a an alliance of four human kings on the Maralon Steppe, namely Morpas Ját II of Imúría, Jaskíó Þúlgas V of Kmarana, Kazraxes Þrybþe IV of Zynþraka and Ögöltik Kmót I of Jörgalía, who, feeling threatened by neighbouring countries' shift into republics, turned to necromancy in order to permanently secure their power as monarchs.
Through months of secret experiments, the kings managed to transform themselves into Borgalor's first and only liches by preventing the separation of soul and body after death, and eventually used similar methods to turn their own subjects into other, less powerful undead beings. As such creatures feel no pain and lack the need for sustenance and sleep, they could be used to work and fight far cheaper than mortal subjects, though their exact use and relation with the latter differed between the four necrocracies.
The tetrarch of Jörgalía, for example, envisioned a country as a breadbasket for the region, as undead serfs meant that food could be produced exclusively for nobles and nomads or exported, while the tetrarch of Imúría wanted to limit undeath as a 'gift' to his most loyal subjects. However, as the effect of undeath began to take its toll on the liches, namely apathy towards the living as their needs and wants became less relatable, the kings grew tired of the latter and sought to get rid of them altogether. In Kmarana, the vast majority of the population was converted to undead in order to form an army to conquer the living, and soon the other necrocracies followed suit, leading to the Fell Wars.
Over the next five years, the combined armies of maralonean and jútrilían humans and Elves along with forces from all over Borgalor, known as The Coalition, managed to defeat members of the Tetrarchy one by one, but had to retreat due to the remaining undead horde turning feral upon their masters' death.
While many have since tried to become a lich themselves, none have succeeded, as all material on the Tetrarchy's experiments has been lost.
