Taurian Kingdom

The Taurian Kingdom is a sizeable Kingdom that occupies a trio of larger islands in the Eastern Saphire Sea. The Taurians take their name from the bull that is the sigil of the Tauramon dynasty, which elevated the kingdom to its current mighty status through reform of its navy and aggressive expansion.

Structure

The Taurian Kingdom is a strongly organized kingdom ruled by a King with absolute authority, whose legitimacy comes both from divine granted rights as well as might. Beneath the king is the Viceroy, each serving as a king in their own right for each island of the Kingdom. While they are still subject to the King, Viceroys have great autonomy to rule their own islands. In times of war, Viceroys serve as the kings generals and constables, leading their island armies in combat. In the Taurian Kingdom, soldiers aren't drafted from the citizenry like in other nations, instead, there's a permanent standing professional army permanently raised under the King and Viceroys.

History

The City-State of Tharkos was simply one of the many city-states on its own island, and of little importance to the outside, until the rise of the Tauramon dynasty. Formerly ostracized from politics and nearly brought to ruin, when the dynasty of the Agathon family ended with the death of a childless monarch, the Tauramon took advantage of the squabbling noble families arguing their right to the throne to seize control of Tharkos by force. Winning over the population with promises of change and prosperity, the powerful and rich Tauramon family imprisoned many nobles and confiscated their assets. From there, they went on to reform the military, replacing the citizen draft by a standing professional army, and redistribute lands from the nobles families to the middle classes of Tharkos. With the help of mercenaries, in a couple of decades, the small city-state would conquer the rest of the island of Saressa and create the Taurian Kingdom. The broadening of the middle class at the expense of the richest families ensured both a great number of supporters for the Tauramon's rule, as well as a large gap between the ruling family as those beneath it who might challenge its place. For the next centuries, the Taurians expanded their rule over other islands over other Helenian cities, under the claim of needing to present a strong unified front to a possible invasion by the Uraoi to the north, who could destroy Helenian culture.
