The Star & Dragon Yacht club is a distinct organization that is separate, but connected, to the Star & Dragon Corporation club in the Dalkit 422 System system. Byer Glenn is a member and is participating in the The Poker Run.
The club is primarly a social club, an outlet for starship owner in the Dalkit 422 System to participate in a contest of skill, perseverence, and luck.
Membership in the club is not terribly expensive and the only requirement is that the member own a space going vessel. Some freighter owners join as it gives them some networking abilities with the wealthy in the system.
The club was formed to enable starship owners to share experiences and information. While it has gone through mild changes in form over the centuries, it has remained accessible to those whom it serves, namely starship owners and their families.
It was initially formed as a haven and sanctuary from the Free Captains. The social nature of the original club helped starship owners to avoid areas known to be dangerous. After the successful first decade, some of the Commodores looked for ways to improve the services that the club could provide, without overlooking the original purpose.
While the Poker Run allowed for an innovative way to elect leadership, classes followed along with havens (essentially bars, inns, and restaurants) scattered through the belts and planets of the Dalkit 422 System. Star & Dragon Corporation sponsored this activity as a way to gain goodwill with starship owners and this has been copied in many areas of the galaxy so that while there are many versions of the Yacht Club around, there is some consistency in services in the many areas that Star & Dragon reaches.
The winner of the Poker Run becomes the Commodore, or President, of the club for a two-year term starting on the first day of the 3rd month of odd numbered years. The membership then votes for the Flag Captain, who takes his chair on the first day of the 4th month of odd numbered years. Some Commodores and Flag Captains have served multiple terms, while others have only served once.
The club tends to be dominated by the upper class. Although there are members who are merchants and others who join for the networking (assuming they meet the eligibility requirements), it remains mostly a club for those who have both money AND time for socializing. There is very little underworld or illegal activity as it's not condoned by the membership or the leadership. That's not to say it doesn't happen, but this is not a institution that is frequented by those who make their living in, shall we say, non-traditional methods.
"A haven for anyone who flies!" cries the public recruiting information from the
Star & Dragon Yacht Club. Younger children of starship owners start out with the annual starship classes that encompass everything from piloting to navigation to engineering to running your own starship business. Remaining with the theme of "Bring your own ship" the club provides instruction to those who desire to learn about starship operations. Advanced and specialty classes are available for those who want them. Nothing is free or granted since all members already own a ship and therefore usually have the means to pay the modest fees for continuing education.
The club owns several harbor docks and restaurants/hotels that serve the membership throughout Dalkit 422 System.
