She comes from a wealthy family who's made their fortune in the publishing industry and herbal medicine/occult business. Her great-grandfather started Quill & Parchment Publishing House and her grandfather added on Candlelight Apothecary. Her father expanded both business.
She is restless and and wants adventure and travel. She can't have either because she's a female in a society that insists females stay at home and marry. Her parents are insisting she gets married but she doesn't like any of the men who are paraded before her.
One night she steps outside for some fresh air, and is intrigued by the Spectral Phaeton. Without hesitation she climbs inside and learns more about slavery. She is then sold into slavery by Mahala.
