Blight Born
"There are within the shadows certain things best left unseen."
The Blight Born are malevolent entities that seem to have emerged directly from the abyssal energies of the Void. These creatures are not merely born of darkness; they are the physical manifestation of negativity and decay. Each Blight Born is distinct, showcasing grotesque and aberrant forms that vary from one to another, hinting at the chaotic nature of their creation. Despite their individual differences, they all possess a common, insidious trait: an entropic hunger that drives them to consume any form of life they encounter. This voracious appetite is not merely for sustenance but seems to be a fundamental aspect of their existence, as they seek to spread the decay and corruption of the Void into the living world, leaving desolation in their wake.
Basic Information
Anatomy
In a generalized way, they seem to take on the form of whatever life they encounter as they emerge from the Void. The mindless force that creates and drives them is one of hunger and devoid of thought or purpose. They appear as a writhing mass of shadow, black at the central core and fading into a wispy grey in the areas furthest from it, such as limbs. Their form itself shifts and changes, but seems to fade back and forth between solid and ghostly. The only deviation from this design is the pair of glowing, blue hued eyes that have an eerie way of following a target despite the fact they are devoid of iris or pupil.
Ecology and Habitats
The Blight Born are manifestations caused by the constant interaction of positive and negative energy being brought together. The paradox created by the event paired with the unending physical reactions in the Blighted Lands has led to numerous aberrations and breaches within reality, allowing unspeakable things such as this to come into existence. The show no signs of intelligence and appear to be unable to communicate at all. As such, they do not hold any form of social structure or direct interactions within the environment other than following their base need to absorb life. Observation has shown that there is enough evidence that within the Void itself, there is some form of hive mind at play, but there is no empirical evidence to support this as of yet.
Dietary Needs and Habits
The creatures that spring from the void are not unlike a vacuum. They are not following any form of hate or malice, or even hunger in the common sense, but instead are following a natural order in that, a void needs to be filled. They will attempt to absorb any living creature they encounter in this way, killing them by surrounding their physical form and draining the life force out, destroying the creature in the process. This process leaves behind a brittle husk of a body that, if left unattended, will rise as a Blighted Aberration the following day. Beyond the need to absorb life energy, the creatures do not actually have a need to either eat nor sleep, and once they have marked a target by assuming its rough form very little will dissuade them from their course.
Behaviour
The Blight Born do not typically exhibit social behavior as seen in many other species. They are solitary by nature, driven primarily by their entropic hunger rather than any communal instincts. However, when they do encounter one another, their interactions are generally neutral unless resources are scarce. In situations where their paths cross during a feeding, they might temporarily converge if it means a more efficient devastation of life, but such alliances are fleeting and purely opportunistic.
Given their origin from the Void and their embodiment of decay, the Blight Born have few natural predators. Any creature daring or powerful enough to hunt them must be immensely strong or similarly otherworldly. When faced with such threats, the Blight Born’s response is primarily aggressive. They utilize their entropic abilities to drain the life force and vitality from their attackers, turning the predators' own strength against them. This defense mechanism not only serves as a means of attack but also as a deterrent, as few creatures can withstand their life-sapping powers without succumbing to weakness or death.
The Blight Born are relentless when it comes to their interactions with prey species. Their approach is direct and destructive, aiming to touch and consume the life energy of any living thing they encounter. They spread decay and corruption rapidly, affecting flora, fauna, and the land itself. This not only fulfills their need to feed but also transforms the environment into one more suitable for their existence, mirroring the desolate and decayed nature of the Void. Their presence alone can be enough to kill smaller creatures and blight vegetation, making their approach towards prey both feared and devastatingly effective.
