The Continent

Aedalus (Ay-da-lus)

The Slumbering Moon

Oh heed us sleeping one amidst the dark,
Give us your light, Send us the spark,
Show us the truth, Lead us not astray,
Dwell in graceful dreams from night til day.
-Excerpt from an Aedalan prayer book
Aedalus is the shattered moon that orbits the world of The Continent and serves as the deity worshipped by The Order of Aedalus. The moon has a large crater on one side where the fragments of which orbit around the impact site, The hole left behind seems to go on forever as all that can be seen is the void of darkness stretching on forever.

Belief

The legend of Aedalus that has been passed down through generations of priests and priestesses is that he was born out of the same celestial object that was named after him, The giant crater left behind was due to the emergence of the massive form that he inhabited, Breaking apart the walls of the moon and setting himself free like a butterfly from a cocoon. As such the deity that dwells inside was also given the name "The Dreamer" to better differentiate the two entities - The name coming from the belief that unlike the tales and origin stories from the vast amount of churches that scatter the world of Calagon, Aedalus was believed to never have visited the mortal world and as such there's no form that well describes his appearance other than that of the moon and the black figure that the order often uses to symbolise his prescence. Believing the reason for his lack of visit is that he has chosen to remain within the hollow moon influencing and guiding the order while he slumbers inside Aedalus.

The First Church

Sometime during the Age of Unification, On an expedition to find what what would now be the site for the city of Meriport, The scouts would bring back refugees from what used to be a human tribe that resided omewhere on the coast of Grimsend now destroyed and scattered by a demon attack. Being brought back to the city with nowhere else to go - Introducing the populace to their religion and spreading the now well known deity that is Aedalus.   Aedalus was the first known god to be worshipped in the city of Rainegate during the Age of Unification, many other religions were speculated to have been created before this time but were never officially known as such and therefore labelled as pagan/unofficial religions.   One such religion the Church of Velorum which was never discovered by the people of Rainegate until the Age of Three when the velorumites would arrive by ships to the coast of Avellonis offering help to the disgruntled populace during their time of need and as such were given free will to practice their religion alongside the Order of Aedalus due to their great deeds.

God of Philosophy

The monks of Aedalus believe that Aedalus gave life a purpose and it's their duty to find out what it is, Some in the order believe that only true knowledge could come about The Dreamer's arrival on this plane of existence and as such have spent their lives trying to bring about the coming of their great patron. While many of the teachings taught by the church have been cemented from the decades it's been an official religion, The church offers a chance for others to look within their own lives and teaches them to use that as a foundation of what it means to live their lives, Finding purpose in a world where others would simply be happy with surviving, The monks need not look towards survival when they know that wether they live or die they worked towards a better future in finding the truth of life.
