Human

Basic Information

Anatomy

Humans are both seen as a default and a bit of an enigma. They are not native to Calstyria, but have been there for nearly countless generations. They resemble many other races, but tend to be seen as a kind of middle ground between many. The term "humanoid" itself has stemmed from the fact that dwor, elves, orcs, and giants can all see some features of themselves in a human. Coming in many shapes and sizes, humans can be hard, soft, short, tall, and everything in between. Some certain trends are shared between humans living in different parts of the world, but the diversity in appearance is a very apparent and proud feature of humans.

Genetics and Reproduction

Humans reproduce sexually with a gestation period of around nine months.

Growth Rate & Stages

Humans grow rather quickly, and are not very long lived. Reaching adulthood around age twenty, and do not often see an entire century.

Ecology and Habitats

Faring well in a large variety of habitats, humans are hardy and can survive both harsh weather and diets readily.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Humans are the peak omnivores, their stomachs being hardy and versatile enough to survive on more limited diets of strictly plants or fish to incredibly diverse diets including all kinds of different food types.

Biological Cycle

Humans tend to get frail when they reach the end of their lifespans, but much of their physical state depends on the condition they keep their bodies in throughout their life.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Humans are present all over Calstyria. Believed to have originated from a civilization in the Uuliate before it became a wasteland, their homelands now mostly cluster around the northern coast and the centre of the continent.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Humans do not posses many horribly attuned or specialized senses. They take rather easily to learning magic, but do not often produce the kinds of magical bloodlines that give birth to sorcerers. Despite this, human druids are renown for their ability to power themselves and house mana directly inside themselves.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Naming traditions tend to vary quite greatly depending on the clan or kingdom a human belongs to.

Major Organizations

There are five major human clans and kingdoms with smaller and lesser-recognized groups living around the fringes of other societies. To the far north live the humans of Kraju and Hrordren. Kraju is a relatively reclusive people who live in the mists of their forests and have religion and culture believed to be deeply rooted in ancient human traditions. The humans of Hrodren are self-appointed caretakers of the second world tree, and live in a small settlement along the broken coast, devoted to protecting the young sapling as it grows. To the northwest live the Galad, a group of humans who have established a large kingdom dominated by trade princes and gallant knights. Just to the north of the Stone Spires live the Qi-Balasi, a group of humans who have developed a very unique culture in coexisting with the dwor and orcs of the steppes. Finally to the south, near the centre of the continent, live the Àrd and the Easterners. The Àrd, once conquered by the dragonborn empire, live in a small smatterings of villages and towns south of the Emalon forest. The Easterners have one of the largest human kingdoms, and have assimilated with Tieflings to create a very strict and traditional culture of priests, engineers, and academics.

Beauty Ideals

Beauty, gender, courtship, and relationship ideals vary greatly depending on the specific culture from which a human hails.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Almost all humans speak Common, and while many have their own specific dialects or more specific home languages, they usually are based in or continue to share a great deal with common and its structures.

History

Humans are believed to have originally come from somewhere in the Old World, migrating to Calstyria by ship many generations ago. Their earliest civilization on the mainland is believed to have been somewhere in the Uuliate before it became the wasteland it is today. From there, a number of new and old human clans have broken off to become kingdoms and city states of their own, each of which have fostered their own uniquely human cultures.
