Luminese Sheep-Dogs

The Fey have animals that resemble normal animals, in the same way human-adjacent Fey resemble humans. The first Luminese sheep-dogs are said to have escaped from the wild Fey and into a human village. While they aren't technically Fey, they aren't quite dogs either. It is said that they were once normal dogs, which were kidnapped by the Fey and have since been changed due to being surrounded and acted upon by Fey Magic for long periods of time.   Luminese sheep-dogs are clever and fiercely loyal. There have been stories of sheep-dogs attacking malicious Fey creatures trying to prey on unsuspecting humans. They function as guard dogs, however due to their general scarcity, they mostly guard their village's sheep, and sometimes their small children. They're very fast and sometime move a little too fluidly, like a shadow or swooping bird. They also seem to have too many teeth, probably due to Fey influence.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Due to the way they came to be, Luminese sheep-dogs are a little strange looking. They're fairly large, with their backs coming up to the knee at the smallest, and up to the hip at largest. They have large faces with big snouts. Their coats are long and fluffy and they have small, round ears that stick straight up from their heads, as if they were cropped.   They come in colours ranging from rust red/black to almost orange, to fawn, to white/pink to purely black. Their eyes are either pitch black or gold, with very little in-between, and their tails are long, curled upwards, and bushy.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Unlike normal dogs, Luminese sheep-dogs have an odd diet, likely due to being around the Fey. While they will eat meat if offered, they're perfectly happy to subsist entirely on milk and honey.   A common way most Luminese feed their dogs is with a mixture of powdered solasigh pods and a little honey with milk, water, or sheep's blood (depending on what's on hand at the time).   Luminese sheep-dogs also enjoy chewing on discarded sheep bones, as well as the occasional stick.

Additional Information

Domestication

At first the villagers were frightened by these creatures, having never really seen a Fey-adjacent dog before. However, the animals made themselves useful by assisting the shepherds in herding the villages' sheep, and they were welcomed into the family, so to speak. As the years have gone by, more and more Luminese sheep-dogs have appeared in various villages across the country. A village may have as many as three dogs, depending on the size. These dogs will be taken care of by the whole village and are free to come and go as they please. Rionna has the most dogs of any Luminese settlement, with nearly 50 at hand currently.   No one is sure where Luminese sheep-dogs come from, as they're not particularly inclined to be bred, though occasionally one might wander into the forest and either return pregnant, or with puppies.
