Naval Compass
"Captain, we're lost!" "We're not lost, the compass has been pointing the way this entire time." "But, Captain, the fog--" "Nothing worth worrying about. If this were a ship graveyard, the needles would be lit up like festival an' spinning like your head las' night." "But, they are, sir. They haven't stopped."Every ship needs a means of navigation, particularly if it's sailing away from visible landmarks. That's where a compass comes into the picture. But with a world so full of magic and mythical creatures, is an ordinary mundane compass good enough? Naval compasses are a higher end style of compass, featuring precision runes and secondary luxtalt needles. Not only can they more reliably find north, they can also point to strong concentrations of Natural Magic.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Fitted on a round face, two metal needles are pinned above a "dial" with notches denoting every 5 degrees. The upper needle is made of iron and is engraved with a precision rune that allows it to find true north even through interference. The secondary needle is made of luxtalt and tuned to point towards the strongest source of natural magic within its range and glow red at the tip; the brighter the red, the stronger the source. If no natural magic is detected, it will spin lazily, sometimes pointing at individuals with potential in Arcane Magic.
Ships that routinely move into known sea monster habitats will often be fitted with upgraded models that contain a second luxtalt needle. This is so that if the ship is being chased by multiple monsters, the crew can be aware of where both are approaching from.
Rarity
These compasses are only fitted on warships. They can be found on trading vessels that were converted from warships.
