"Care Bears: The Story of Nathaniel Coldheart" is a Care Bears AU that was originally supposed to be a modern spin on the classic DiC episodes of the Care Bears TV series in the '80s. When I realized that the AU's version of Professor Coldheart, Professor Nathaniel Coldheart, was getting far more characterization and backstory than any of the other characters, I decided to retool the AU to make him the protagonist (dang it, it happened again!). He starts out as a man who views all displays of love and caring as hypocritical and wants to destroy what he believes is a harmful pretense, even if it destroys the world around him. Over the course of the story, he learns that not only is love not entirely a farce, but he actually has deep feelings of affection for his assistant and his daughter, and that helps him to learn to love life and other people again.

Love-A-Lot Bear has an important job in the Care Bear family. As the protector of love, she is in charge of protecting the loving and caring feelings people have for each other. But when Professor Coldheart captures her and strips her of her belly badge, he uses it to turn the loving feelings of the people on Earth into a storm of cold weather and cold feelings. Will the Care Bears be able to save her in time and bring love back to the people of Earth?
