The Desert of Shian
The Desert of Shian lies within the Kingdoms of Isendree and Nyrona on the southernmost peninsula of Famgia, though neither accepts the Shian as citizens of its country.
Geography
The desert terrain remains the same throughout almost the entire region. There are three smaller regions that are the exception to this. The Kiri Mountains in the north, Shi rivers on the northwestern coast, and the Lorni forest on the northeastern coast. While these areas are traditionally considered part of the desert because of their arid climate, the governments of Isendree and Nyrona have separated them from the main body of the desert, separating the Shian people from the rest of the countries' populations and removing the Shian people who lived in these regions.
Localized Phenomena
One of the most curious phenomena in the desert is called the sand galaxy, or the sand aurora. It typically happens after a sandstorm or on very windy days. Once a sandstorm has mostly died down bits of sand are often still carried around by the wind for several hours afterwards. When these remnants are large they often resemble the bits of the galaxy that can be seen on clear nights. Much larger and rare are sand clouds that take the shape of auroras in the sky, which cannot be seen from the desert because of its proximity to the equator.
History
The history of the Desert of Shian is clouded in mystery and legend. It is believed that in ancient times it was not only the home but the kingdom of the Shian. In those days they ruled the land peacefully and enjoyed prosperous trade from their neighbors. But when King Faolán ruled over the Samara River tribes they became envious of the Shian's wealth and prosperity. They attacked the kingdom, destroy the capital, and killing the king and all of his family. Though they tried to rule Shian, they found that the desert did not suit them and left the Shian to fend for themselves. Before they left they razed the city to the ground and spread salt across the land and through the water so that the Shian could never again prosper as they had in the days of old.
Many Shian hold this tale near to their hearts and have passed it on for generations. Outside of the desert, it is believed to be nothing more than a fairy tale. Unfortunately, the hatred and mistreatment of the Shian are not exclusive to the tale though as they still struggle to receive aid and recognition from both Isendree and Nyrona.
