Isendree is a country of traders, artisans, and aristocrats. Famous for its commerce, Isendree's capital, Kiara, is the largest and most prosperous port city in the world.
The hierarchy of titles within the Isendreen government is a bit complicated, as there are a great number of noble titles and these nobles have many different duties in the government. Although there are a great many nobles, only a fraction of them has even the slightest chance of becoming king or queen, because even though a male heir is preferred if the king did not have a male heir a female heir's legitimacy will not be questioned. It would be considered disgraceful for a male cousin to usurp the throne from his female cousin. The following is a list of titles, in hierarchical order, and a short description of the duties that correspond with each title.
- The King or Queen's main duty is to write laws and policies and decide when to go to war.
- The King or Queen Consort's main duty is to judge large or difficult court cases.
- The Crown Prince or Princess represents the other nobles and the people before the King or Queen with their petitions and needs.
- Prince and Princess's duties are mainly symbolic and include attending festivals and other events, and making appearances through the year that their family members do not have time for.
- Dukes, Duchesses, Counts, Countesses, Barons, and Baronesses are in charge of duchies, counties, and baronies respectively. They take care of administrative tasks in their respective land so that the King or Queen can take care of larger issues.
- Lords and Ladies represent the King or Queen at any councils or committees that are not of extreme importance such as the Vlaaderen Committee.
- Knights have many duties including acting as policemen, investigators, military officers, and guards. Occasionally men and women will be dubbed knights as an honorary title for many things, including advancing science or medicine, great artistry, or an act of great bravery. In these cases, they do not take any of the aforementioned duties but continue in their profession.
In Isendree, the governing power's main goal is to keep the country prosperous and to allow merchandise to continue to flow in and out of the country. Because trade in Isendree is controlled by individual guilds, the country's government does everything it can to keep its guilds happy, trade routes open, and good relationships with countries that can give profitable trade.
As one of the oldest countries in Famgia, Isendree has a lengthy and complicated history. Despite being founded over a thousand years ago, the details of its founding are almost fully known. The first kingdom of Isendree sprung from the remains of the Samara alliance. As time went on the chief of the Isendreen tribe, Cheif Bhaltair, gained more and more control over the other tribes until his fellow chiefs became puppets with which he controlled the entire Samara Alliance and the conquered Quioté River Tribes. He did much to unite the Samara tribes, and without his leadership, they would have lost control of the Quioté tribes. Upon his death, his son, Faolán, was crowned king of the Samara and Quioté tribes. Although the elderly chiefs of the Samara tribes did this willingly their heirs did not like it at all and planned to dethrone him once they were chiefs. Afraid for his life and desperate to legitimize his power, King Faolán married the daughter of the chief of the Diarad tribe, the largest of the Quioté tribes. During the celebration, the young king had all of the other chiefs and their families slaughter, with except for his father-in-law, whose only living family and heir was his daughter. Although some tribesmen fought back, they were quickly silenced by Faolán and his army.
One of the most influential events in Isendree's history was the arrival of Luminaran traders. This event was the first time meeting between the Isendreen people and a more developed society. This meeting was one of the few in which Luminarans did not take advantage of people, which is uncharacteristic of them. Instead, they made fair trades with the Isendreens and signed a treaty with them. Although the treaty has undergone several revisions over the years, the two countries are still on excellent terms.
In 525 AnCog an Isendreen Surveyor discovered that the boarders through the Narog Mountains had not previously been defined. After this discrepancy was brought to the king, King Vangelis, he began to set up military outposts in small mining towns and villages, until he reached the edge of the mountain range. This enraged the Kirani King Gavril, who in turn set up his army at the base of the mountains. As the two forces faced off, other countries with borders on the mountains realized that their mountain borders were also not as firm as they should be. Many of these countries settled this problem easily but others, like Isendree and Kiranin, did not resolve the issue for several years. All of the unresolved border issues were resolved at the signing of the Treaty of Altena, which was headed by Arenoo a relatively new country, bringing peace to the region at last.
The discovery of the first recording of a Kuloonfu ’Umeei, although it would seem trivial, was very important to modern Isendeeren society. In 1000 AnCog many young people were beginning to be dissatisfied with the traditions which often had couples married too soon or not soon enough. Many of them continued to follow the tradition, mainly because of their parents and grandparents, who had participated in the tradition, but there was no concrete evidence to prove that it had been a tradition for more than two or three generations. Some used this as an excuse not to follow the tradition, but when the recording was discovered their dreams were shattered. It reinforced the fact Kuloonfu ’Umeei was at least 600 years old, long enough to be a tradition in the minds of both its supporters and its opponents.
Although the Isendreen government desires continuous peace between itself and its allies, Isendree has a relatively large army and navy. To keep from intimidating its allies, the Isendreen army is the nation's best-kept secret. Only one division of the army is not hidden from the public eye and that is the Royal Guard, but, again, little is known about them.
Isendree has a good public education system that goes all the way up through the college level. Although higher education is available around a child's twelfth birthday, schools work with their parents to help them enter into an apprenticeship. For some professions, a child will continue in school through secondary school and college before entering into an internship with a master in the profession they are pursuing. Generally, children enter into a family trade that had been handed down for generations but this is not always the case especially when there are multiple children in a family. In some cases, children drop out of school after their twelfth birthday. These children usually belong to a family of farmers and are needed on the farm or belong to a particularly poor family and have to get low paying jobs to help support their families. Although this happens with almost all farm children, these children are not forced to continue schooling because they have completed the amount of schooling required by the government. Because children are only required to go to school for a couple of years their education is rigorous, and of the highest quality.
Because its actions are trade centered, Isendree has an exceptionally good infrastructure. Many roads and highways connect Isendree's boarders to the coast and capital. These roads are made of smooth paving stones on top of layers of sand, stone, and rubble to help them last. The sewage in Isendreen cities is the most modern of any of its day. Underground stonewalled "pipes" carry human waste away from the city and into large vates where it is dried before being sold as fertilizer. Toilets with levers and doors, keep rats out of the bathroom, which is usually a building separated from the house, and keep waste from splashing into the bathroom. Although the Samara, Quioté, and other rivers carry clean water throughout Isendree, aqueducts carry water to areas that do not have clean water or lack long-lasting water sources, such as the southeasternmost region of Isendree. These aqueducts are made of stone and were constructed in 854 AnCog and have been continually repaired since then.
