Ash Halls

Comfort for the Burntout

Cold baths, balms, and soft blankets. Whatever we can do to help keep them comfortable and cool in their final days.
— Soothnurse
When a Catalurgist pushes themselves too hard and experiences more Burn than they can handle, Burnout occurs. Physical damage done through excessive heat from Catalurgic magic, it cooks, hardens, and scars a Catalurgists body -- bones, organs, and all.   Burntout Catalurgists, unless very lucky, find their lifespans incredibly shortened whenever Burnout occurs. To help reduce the pain in their final days or hours, medical clinics known as Ash Halls were established by any organization that employs Catalurgists for extended periods of time. Here the Catalurgists may come, to find any small relief that might ease their passing.

Comfort and Cooling

Once Burn becomes Burnout for a Catalurgist, there is not much that can be done for the unfortunate individual. Ash Halls then serve mostly to fulfil whatever request the Catalurgist might have -- these requests usually come in the form of asking for pain relief, heat reduction, or comfort and company. Thus Ash Halls are normally stocked up as much as possible on pain killers, cold water and balms, and the softest blankets able to be found.

Soothnurse

Caretakers of Burntout Catalurgists within Ash Halls are known as Soothnurses -- it is their duty to sooth the pain and discomfort of the dying within the halls.

Limits of Care

Ash Halls are generaly permanent, well established structures with consistent supply of cooling goods and electricity to always ensure maximum comfort to Burntout Catalurgists. For field or combat Catalurgists who generally operate in times of war, there is no such comfort available to them. During battle, Burn happens at such intense rates that once a Catalurgist hits burnout, they generally have minutes left, rather than days or even hours.

A sad yet comforting place... In regards to combat cathalurgists: is it common for people, maybe colleagues, to kill them to ease their pain? Or alternatively, stay with them for those last minutes?

Definitely! Combat Catalurgists are sadly the most prepared for going through Burnout, as they both expect it and know they cannot avoid it during battle -- so there's a strong camaraderie between those on the field. Comforting them in their final minutes, or ending the pain for them, whichever the Burntout requests.

Nice article, seems like a great place. Who does pay for it? Do the catalurgists have to have some saving put aside just in case? Or is it maybe included in their job contracts?

It depends on who they're hired by, so definitely contracts! Many Catalurgists won't work for an organization unless they're guaranteed a comfortable end, if they push too hard. Some definitely think they won't need it though, and find themselves regretting it later D:

It's sad that nothing can really be done for them in the end besides making them comfortable. In some way, I think it would be preferable to be on the battlefield with only minutes left instead of hours and days. Great article :)

You should check out the The 5 Shudake, if you want of course.

Yeah, when they push something as powerful as Catalurgy too far, it leads to some pretty unfortunate results :( At least on the Battlefield, it can be over before you know it!   Thank you :)

This is just an awesome idea to begin with. I feel like its something that often gets missed. what happens when to those who have no hope of surviving a condition? Hospice care is important and you do it justice here. I feel bad for the catalurgists. I can only imagine what its like for the soothnurses. it takes a special kind of person to care for the dying, day in and day out. well done

Thank you, Dylon!   It definitely is a heavy topic to cover -- I also have incredible respect to anyone who works in that sort of field, it must be incredibly difficult. I will need to write an article on the Soothnurses at some point, give them the recognition they deserve!

Short but sweet. Really the best the poor burnout saps can hope for. It is a wonderfully poignant piece of writing. What do they do if/when they run out of painkillers? Does that happen often in times of war and conflict?

That's the goal this year! Cathedris-candies, bite sized and sweet articles, hopefully :D   And thank you so much <3   If painkillers run out, they mostly just have to focus on anything else they have on hand to sooth -- cold water baths, or just keeping company to distract the burntout. Times of large scale war see this happen often, sadly :(

Thank you so much! I love that the prompts this year are really allowing for easy connection between them :)

The combat ones... yikes. Those poor people. I love that the Ash Halls have such a focus on pain relief, soothing, and comfort.

It's certainly a hard and short life for them, important to give them relief in the end :(   Thanks for the comment :)

This place seems surprisingly peaceful, and ultimately not that bad of a place to die in I feel. Nice piece of writing!

Thank you, TC!   If I had to go out like this due to Burnout, I'd definitely like it to be in a place like this too. :)
