Angelbird Gate

One of the greatest marvels of engineering is the wormhole gate. These large structures are what make interstellar travel cheap and accessible to any spacecraft. The most impressive of them are the ones that connect galaxies, spanning millions of lightyears, and the largest of them all: Guardian Angel Bridge. The Guardian Angle Bridge connects the Protea Galaxy to the Trea-Tome Galaxy. On the Trea-Tome end is the Guardianbird Gate which connects to the Angelbird Gate a whole 7.8 million lightyears away

Structure

Superstructure

The gate is one of the largest ever constructed, only slightly smaller than the Origin Bridge gates connecting the Trea-Tome and Scedema Galaxy. The diameter of the gates are identical. Each gate has an opening 6,890 meters wide, and is 540 meters thick. The superstructure is painted a bright orange color, with white accents.

Engineering Section

Either side of the ring superstructure is an asymmetrical setup of mechanical and storage facilities. The starboard side (the right side when facing forward) consists of the wormhole generator, laser assembly, and fusion bomb system for powering the lasers that generate a wormhole. This section also holds small, spherical tanks for dark matter, the gate cooling system, and solar panels for providing base load power.   The port side of the station is where the exotic matter. Hundreds of incredibly strong tanks store this resource responsible for the stability and safety of the wormhole. There is a large dock for ships that transport the exotic matter to restock the gate's needed supply of the material, and this dock has to be large. New gates in new galaxies have to rely on periodic shipments of exotic matter aboard massive tankers, unlike gates in developed galaxies that can get a constant supply from smaller vessels.

Radiators

The gate and all its equipment are cooled by radiators of absolutely staggering size. From tip-to-tip, the two "wings" of the gate are over 55,000 meters in length. The starboard side radiator is slightly wider than the port side, coming in at 8,300 and 8,050 meters respectively. The wings are offset at a 30 degree downward angle. This design choice was made so that the gate, which orbits in the L2 Lagrange point behind the planet Litianam, faces away from the planet while the radiators are not in sunlight.

The surface of radiators are covered in large hexagonal structures with a dark brown color. The color and the apparent texture at a distance has been described to be like "fine shoe leather."

Thrusters

Keeping the orbit of a gate constant is difficult with so many forces acting upon it such as ship transits, changing mass, and gravitational effects from the other end. When you place that gate in a Lagrange point, keeping stable becomes more important. Fusion Jets around the gate superstructure provide necessary correction thrust. Pods of four engines provide yaw, pitch, roll, and directional control over the station.

Crew Module

Angelbird Gate is equipped with a habitation module at the forward end of the port side radiator. This area is built like an orbital station that was glued to the radiator structure. Despite the looks, the crew module is part of the original design. The crew embarked on the station are responsible for traffic control, station functions, and carrying out basic maintenance.

Construction

Building the Superstructure

The gate superstructure of Angelbird and Guardianbird are identical. However, they were not constructed at the same time. Guardianbird Gate was constructed before Angelbird, and shipped in small sections to where its home. Angelbird Gate would start shortly after its twin was finished being built, and later shipped to the staging area for the Protea Galaxy transit. In pieces, Angel would be attached to the exploration vessel Ornamain which would make the intergalactic transit via the completed Guardianbird Gate. In the Protea Galaxy, the sections of the Angelbird Gate would be assembled in its current location, but it won't start operation yet.

Building Gate Systems

Intergalactic colonization is an incredibly difficult endeavor. The people that travel those distances are tasked with setting up the foundations for a self-sufficient branch of civilization. With limited support from home, most parts of the gate have to built locally. Tanks, power distribution, coolant distribution, radiators, and other systems of Angelbird were manufactured using fabrication equipment onboard the Ornamain or on the surface of Litianam.
