The Nobles Obligations
The laws of the realm are to be upheld by the Nobility, they are expected to exercise their authority to maintain rule of law, to protect the people's rights to property, life and liberty, to apprehend and punish law breakers and to provide a levy to the Duke in times of war. In return the law expects the people to pay tribute to their Lord, be it through a percent of their coin earned in trade or a percentage of produce grown in their farms, also acceptable is for service in their Lord's armed forces. If this social contract and expectation is not carried out, a judicial mediator appointed by the Duke shall investigate and determine the proper course of action and evaluate if reparations are to be paid. The social contract works both ways, a Lord found guilty of not upholding his obligations can be fined or in extreme cases stripped of title and rank.
