Rayon Calder
There are many tales told about the man who was once Yasur's greatest mind. Some say he argued that people ought to try to understand all they could of the nonmagical world before concerning themselves with magical matters, others claim that such a statement was only implied in his work. There are some reports that he was the first person to intentionally extract a heatstone from the ground. The reality is that Rayon Calder was simply an experimenter whose devotion to his work inspired those around him to work with similar drive. Any of the claims may or may not be true, but he did not come to be well-known due to any particular occurrence. Rather, it was his continual search for knowledge and information, combined with the fact that his experiments did frequently yield useful results, that gave him his reputation as one of Droden's first true scientists.
Mental characteristics
Education
As his father was one of the people who dealt with the minerals mined from Takalmau, Rayon was brought up with an education in the properties and rarities of the numerous kinds of rocks and metals found below the surface. At age twelve, he travelled to Kember to continue his education, and it was there that he discovered his love of research and experimentation, as well as first distinguishing himself. Eight years later, he returned to Yasur, where his father's business, now in the hands of his younger brother, provided him with the resources he needed to continue his work.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Rayon Calder is attributed with the discovery of more than forty useful alloys, many of which are still used today. Much of his work was done on classifying metals and stones, which paved the way for much of Droden's technological advancement in recent times. His way of working is now used as the model of research and experimentation taught to aspiring scientists across the country, and there is no doubt that it is effective. There are many other names whose contributions to current research should not be overlooked, but Rayon Calder is notable in that almost half of his work was done by himself, with no co-authors and few references.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Rayon Calder seems to have been driven by a desire to discover. A few family records now made public indicate that he would remain in his lab for days on end, emerging only to eat and receive deliveries of more materials. Often, should news come in of a discovery somewhere in Droden, within the moon he would have at least made preparations to visit the discoverer, if not done so already. He seemed to have some interest in money, but it later became apparent that it was the metal discs themselves that were important to him, not their value.
Virtues & Personality perks
His attention to even the smallest detail was unmatched, to the point that he could identify which section of the mines a piece of ore came from. His notes were meticulously laid out, with measurements given in almost unreasonable precision.
Vices & Personality flaws
As with many scientists, he had a habit of talking at length about his field of research. He also sometimes forgot to sleep, so engrossed was he in working with a particular combination of metals.
