Far Hurston
Situated on the northern shore of the Naros Archipelago, about 2 walks east of the village of Hurston is the settlement of Far Hurston from where the finest opaline is made.
Demographics
Far Hurston is an unusual settlement being a mixed population of humans and drakiss; the former mainly natives of North Naros, the latter from Kamgrimmur's Crew. Though involvement in the opaline trade is a family business Far Hurston is a working settlement, not a family home so the only young of either species to be found there are the apprentices and wyrms lewarning the basics of their trades. The total population, of around 80 includes around a dozen such youngsters and is split roughly 4:1 drakiss and humans.
Government
The two species govern themselves with a degree of separation, the leader of the humans being known as "The Gaff", that of the Drakiss known as "The Ken". These two alternate by seasons in precedence and where the affairs of the two groups intertwine a randomly selected group of four of each, known as "The Lot" acts as jury and councillors.
Industry & Trade
The business of Far Hurston is Opaline - when the area was resettled after the The Devastation of Naros it was found that the Taruvian Cave Snails in this area were unusually large and though useless for the production of Amythys their size meant greater amounts of opaline, and moreover, larger pieces, could be obtained.
The general split of the trades sees the humans farming the snails and through their efforts and a long running breeding programme the average size of the snails ihas been increasing over the centuries such that even a small piece of Far Hurston opaline is large by most other standards.
The Drakiss part of the trade is in the cutting and preparation of the Opaline - extracting form the curving shells the largest and flattest possible pieces which are most valuable for the adornmment of other objects.
