K4-5 Grey Tortoise
They offer a wide variety of food and drinks for their customers at average prices and of average quality. It is owned by Wijnanda Whinegardt.
Among the workers who are commonly there are the bartender "Griswald" Ganholm Griswald, and serving wenches "Candy" Candice Horshbaugm, "Gretta" Gretchen Slater, and Bathilda Grassendorf. The majority of the time, Wijnanda is in the kitchen unless someone wants a room, in which case Griswald will call her out from the kitchen (there is a small opening in the wall between the bar and the kitchen through which the waitstaff can talk back and forth with the kitchen staff (Wijnanda has a couple of others who help her out there during the common meal times and into the evening.
Return to Channel Cities, Martelain, or the K4 Merchant’s Square District of Martelain.
This three-story, cut-stone building sets at the south end of the Martelain Merchants Square. It is one of the few taverns in the city of Martelain that is still busy and very crowded (even with the depressed economy that dominates the city). This part of the city is usually busy with cart merchants hawking their wares in the market square, so the area tends to be bustling during the day, but the people tend to thin out on the streets just before dark due to the high crime rates and danger of being out on the Martelain streets after dark. However, this is when the Grey Tortoise tends to be the busiest.
The customers vary quite a bit in profession and background. This is also known for being one of the few establishments in the channel cities that is a "neutral" place for the various underground guilds. Thus, it is not uncommon to see meetings between the leaders of the various thieves or other espionage guilds taking place here. While it is a very visible place, the busy nature helps to tone down the watchful trying to gain information. The place is kept quite dark after the sun sinks across the other side of the channel, and the back entrance through the stables as well as the private booths help to keep the "meetings" quiet and un-noticed.
