History of the World of Ærnth is a touchy thing, generally being defined by the winners of battles and the rulers of lands. There are several different “reckonings” from which times and ages are figured, each with its own starting point and reasoning. The dominant (as reckoned here) form is figured by the reckoning of the Isle of Stars, due to their being widely recognized as the “Masters of Lore” within the World of Ærnth. This is the most widely used, as unlike most others, the Isle of Stars reconning in unbiased, since they are closer to a truly politically neutral organization as any other that has kept such historical records. As well as being the organization that has kept records longer than any other organization on the face of Ærnth. The First Age or Age of Legends starting from the estimate (estimated based off of ancient legends as passed down from generation to generation prior to the Isle of Stars compiling a recorded history of the world) of the earliest years. Due to the start date not being known, it was decided by the Loremasters of the Isle of Stars that these dates would count down (backwards) from the start of the "Second Age" (the founding of the Isle of Stars and their compiling a recorded history of the world). The “Second Age”, also known as the “Age of Enlightenment” defined as starting at the time of the founding of the Isle of Stars. The “Third Age”, also known as the "Modern" Age, Age of Expansion, or Age of Trade; this current age is defined as starting at the time of the founding of the Ruglund Empire, due to its effects on the history of the world since that time, despite its fall long ago. The following time line designates everything in terms of the year followed by the Age Designation (as in F.A. for First Age, S.A. for Second Age, and T.A. for Third Age). The year designations for the Second Age are reckoned from the founding of the Isle of Stars. The First Age time periods are designated as negative years (as indicated by a “-“ in front of the number) dating back from the invention of written words (as best as can be surmised from the limited records and by piecing together the accounts collected by the Monks or Masters of Lore from the Isle of Stars). It must also be recognized that history is not always the same from one culture to another or from one region to another, even though two cultures or regions may have had an involvement in some historical event, their perspectives of these events are often different, and can even be contrary to one another. In these cases, who is correct??? Having an interest in history (as a hobby, so no I’m not an expert) I have seen many times, different perspectives of the same historical event. Therefore, the following timeline has been developed over the years with that in mind. As such, there will be a few contradictions and differences as well as a few incorrect events. So please keep in mind that many of what look like mistakes are in fact intentional errors. Also note that this is only a rough guideline and as such there will be a lot of smaller and less significant events that occur outside of what is covered below.
By the reckoning of the Isle of Stars, with the Second Age (Age of Enlightenment) defined as starting at the time of the founding of the Isle of Stars.
Felstil Harkobar passes from life and it is decided by the four remaining founders that someone from the staff should be elected by the non-Council sitting staff to fill the 5th Council of Stars position (as well as any others that are vacated by the deaths of the Founders).
Teirdraelis Greybeard died at an unusually young age for a Gnome (only 173 years old).
Glastinov Ruglund unites 3 Aquilai tribes to defend against the united Galthan tribes, at the age of only 14 after his father is assassinated by a Galthan Shadowblade (assassin), and leads them to a stunning victory.
The “Third Age”, also known as the "Current" Age, Age of Expansion, or Age of Trade; this current age is defined as starting at the time of the founding of the Ruglund Empire, due to its effects on the history of the world since that time, despite its fall long ago.
Glastinov Ruglund unites 3 Aquilai tribes to defend against the united Galthan tribes, at the age of only 14 after his father is assassinated by a Galthan Shadowblade (assassin), and leads them to a stunning victory.
This peace accord ended upon an attack by the Ruglund Empire against the elves at sea, followed by attacks on the elven homelands and the death of the elven King Fanstail.
Emperor Prastenov Ruglund intiates a massive war effort to conquor as many lands as possible, with most efforts extending primarily to the east (and surrounding the elven lands that are protected by the peace accord signed by his great grandfather). Many small freeholds fall to his rule during the nearly five decades of this expansion.
This causes minor riots in some rural areas of the Ruglund Empire, but most of these are quickly put down (often through brutal executions and persecution of any other belief systems).
At the death of his father, Prastenov.
Shothain elected High Queen of the Grey Elves upon King Fanstail being lost at sea in a bad storm while trying to defend homeland against Ruglund Empires breaking of the Peace Accord.
This new city replaced Aquinoch as the eastern trade center (although Aquinoch remains an important trade port) and launching point for further eastern expansion and raiding.
Argailin the Ancient was believed to be the last remaining elf who's birth had occured in the First Age.
Some claim that it is a sign of the weakening of the power of the various deities, while others claim that the veil between Ærnth and the Void is weakened by some evil force. It is later discovered that after this ethereal and supernatural event, that on rare occasions, this veil between dimensions will temporarily tear open. This often results in strange effects or the appearance of strange creatures that are not part of this world.
Foul play on the part of Ruglund Empire is strongly suspected but not known for sure.
This is the first settlement in the region since the founding of the Isle of Stars (on the smaller islands in the south of the channel) over 3500 years earlier. This city goes on to eventually become the trade center of the World of Ærnth almost 2,000 years later.
Within ten years, he also manages to pull the Gambed peoples into his kingdom (who outnumber the Masgand's 2 to 1). Over this time, they continue to try to shake-off the yoke of the Ruglund Empire, but the Ruglund Empire's hold on the area is too strong, so the new Gorled Kingdom essentially becomes a Tribute State of the much larger and more powerful Ruglund Empire.
Village of Martelain founded by Grengor Martelain for the processing and loading of the metals from the newly opened mines in the mountains to the east of the channel.
Glastinov Ruglund-IV murders his own father (Glaimend Ruglund) and seizes the thrown. Most of his children die from mysterious occurrences, and it is suspected that he is behind these deaths out of fear that one of them will assassinate him.
Village of Gorled built on the channel across from the Island city of Argentum as a point of trade between the new kingdom and the small city of merchants.
Glastinov Ruglund-IV dies without an heir to inherit the throne. Numerous shirt-tail relatives and military leaders vie for power throwing the Empire into chaos, resulting in a slow and steady decline of the Empires power.
The Sibbicai (again) defeat the Ruglund Empires best troops, resulting in the Empire finally giving up the idea of ever conquering the Sibbicai. This also solidifies the reputation of the Sibbicai military as the ultimate small but disciplined military force in the world.
The city of Martelain rebels against the Ruglund Empire and breaks free due to control of the wealth of the mines. The leader of the rebellion becomes King (Vraingar VanDenlendesor) of the new nation of Martelain at the request of the newly freed people of the city and mines.
An Æther Storm erupts at the Ruglund Imperial Palace, causing massive damage to the fortress and parts of the city, with numerous demon-like creatures entering the World of Ærnth. Rumors start to run rampant throughout the lands about dark or evil arcane rituals gone wrong.
62 emperors come to power and die within 2 years or less of gaining the Ruglund Empire throne. One Emperor only lasts 8 days before being assassinated by his younger brother who then becomes Emperor for about 2 months before being assassinated himself. The last of the Ruglund Empire crumbles during this time due to civil unrest, rebellion, civil war.
"Emperor" Daimion Gailsbad is assassinated just days after an incredibly infectious plague sweeps through the city and the same day that five different legions are defeated in distant lands and the two largest naval fleets are destroyed on the 16th day of the Reddening Moon. It was recorded by dozens of different historians and chroniclers around the world that there was a “Blood Moon”, which lasted from the full moon through the next six nights, marking the event as if the heavens foretold the fall of the Ruglund Empire.
The City-State of South Shore is organized and starts to grow out of the swamplands to the south of the Silver River (across the river from Martelain). It is set up as a (limited) "Democracy".
The Great Cathedral of the All Father is built in the city of Gorled, as it is made the "Official" religion of the kingdom. The law states that any that do not follow the laws of the Church of the All Father must be cleansed through pain, for their heathen ways.
Dorgard League formed by the "Petty Kingdoms" to help protect each other from the Gorled Kingdom after Gorled conquerors and kills the royal family of Dorhain. The Dorhain lands are regained by the new League, and a "Common" city, shared by the remaining Petty Kingdoms is built on the shores of the Loudewater River across from the city of Gorled. This city is named Dorgard, in reference and honor of the Dorhain family who had previously ruled these lands.
Gorled conquors another of the Petty Kingdom's.
Gorled conquors another of the Petty Kingdom's and kills the formerly ruling family of these lands.
The "Inner Circle of Magi", changes it's name to the "High Tower", and builds a huge stone tower in Dorgard as their base of operations (and to help protect Dorgard from Gorled in exchange for certain Tax exemptions). This new tower, is built incredibly fast. In less than a year, it beocmes the tallest structure in the entire World of Ærnth and towers over The Great Cathedral of the All Father. This tower becomes known as the High Tower of Magic.
Fain the Fair elected High King of the Fair Elves upon death of Heldonis, who was struck by a falling tree during a severe storm.
This war quickly becomes a stale-mate due to "intervention" by the High Tower of Magic.
Other than the burning of the bridge between Dorgard and Gorled, most of this war took place in the shadows. With the Gorled Kingdom trying to undermine the trade and economy of the Petty Kingdoms, rather than an actual invasion being attempted. But it ends after Gorled realizes that the High Tower of Magic is again backing Dorgard and is subtly sabotaging Gorled's attempts to undermine Dorgard and the Petty Kingdoms.
This war ends up being a repeated (and longer) version of the 7th war about 16 years earlier, and also ends in a stalemate.
This war ends up being fought with the Kingdom of Gorled performing small raids into the northern Petty Kingdoms. So the skirmishes tend to be small, but occur over a period of 2 years. a modest amount of problems occur for Dorgard, but once the High Tower of Magic starts to monitor the border and is able to cause havok against the small raiding parties, the tide starts to turn and Gorled ceases these incursions.
This massive invasion far up the Loudewater River from the coast ends after only three days, due to a harsh and devastating retaliation on the part of the High Tower of Magic against the Gorled Kingdom.
This war was much more subtle on the part of Gorled, with having paid large rewards to a few memebers of the High Tower of Magic as well as having spies infiltrate both the High Tower of Magic, the Dorgard city guards as well as a few spies in some of the Petty Kingdom ruling families. This, combined with a more carefully covered up and subtle raiding skirmishes, caused a lot of delays in any substantial counter-measures being taken by the Petty Kingdoms and the High Tower of Magic. But in the end, most of the spies and infiltrants were discovered and dealt with or elimiated.
This was Gorled's first successful war against any of the Petty Kingdom's since the High Tower of Magic set up and agreed to defend Dorgard and the Petty Kingdoms. It was managed by numerous spies infiltrating the Kaseldorn Kingdom military and household. These spies, then intercepted and prevented communications and manged to assassinate about half of the Kaseldorn family at the same time that several small military raids occured and wiped out most of the Kaseldorn military almost overnight. This caused the few remaining members of the Kaseldorn family to flee to the west, over the mountains and into the Móch Gátho (Goblin Wilderlands). By the time the rest of the Petty Kingdoms and the High Tower of Magic found out about what happened, it was too late to prevent it. So trade with the Gorled Kingdom was completely cut off from the Petty Kingdoms for many years afterwards, but this had little effect since very little trade occured between them anyways due to the many centuries of wars that had already been occuring.
Construction of New Gorled Walls. Thus "New Gorled" is now enclosed within the cities walls, but more growth continues outside the walls.
Political upheavals and corruption start to shake the foundations of the Martelain government. It later surfaces that the Northern Empire was behind it.
Martelain Prison built in a burned out section of the city. This section of the city is burned out due to the frequent riots. The prisoners that the Northern Empire collect after each of these riots is the reason for needing such a large prison. A "chopping block" is also set up just outside the prison, where rioters and others who rebel against the Northern Empire are regularly executed by the Northerners.
Newest Governor takes power in Martelain. He is reclusive and is almost never seen in public, rumors abound about him, including that he is a "Black Sheep" of the Imperial family of the Northern Empire, he is crazy, he is paranoid, etc.
Kasthinmora Fathsoulen was voted to the position of Master on the Isles of Stars and is still serving in this position.
This is the current year, where the various current campaigns start...
