Burrford

The Dwarven City in the Oxtooth Mountains

Written by Scribe01

"They say that Burrford is the city where the anvils never stop singing. I can tell you, that's true! It's a bloody racket. My advice is to get a room with a thick walls. Many inns in Burrford offer such accommodation for an extra coin or two. That, my friend, should tell you all you need to know about dwarves..." - Edwyn Tullyson, famed human explorer

Demographics

The inhabitants of Burrford are as follows:
  • 80% Mountain Dwarf
  • 10% Human
  • 5% Hill Dwarf
  • 5% Other

Government

The City of Burrford falls under the rule of Underking Ambolt Frostiron and his house. However, since this is a constitutional monarchy, ultimate authority and oversight rests with the House of Voices - a counselling body that discusses all constitutional and judicial matters.
The Governing Body is organised thus:
  • Underking Ambolt Frostiron
  • Underqueen Kulta Frostiron
  • Grand Vizier Tikari Duncan
  • Kilnkeeper Takka Gildenhammer
  • Mistress of Pykes Helmi Thunderkin
  • Knower Meikka Ironfoot
  • Master Inker Kivi Forgeheim

Guilds and Factions

While the Major Houses own several businesses and estates within the city, several guilds exist. They are as follows:

The Brewer's Guild

This guild controls the production and distribution of ale, beer, mead, and other alcoholic concoctions. Only kegs with their official stamp are allowed to be sold in the taverns of the city. Heavy fines (and/or imprisonment, depending on the gravity of the transgression) are imposed on those who do not follow the guild's strict guidelines.
  • Leader: Brewmaster Malt Pickfoot

The Guild of Knowers

This is the dwarven equivalent of a mage's guild. Mystics, wizards, artificers, sorcerers, and learned dwarves of all kinds either serve as part of this guild or fall under its jurisdiction. Members are highly respected by the community for their expertise and power. They reside in the Wyrmhyde Manor on the top level of the city.
  • Leader: Knower Meikka Ironfoot

The Guild of Keepers

This guild are the record-keepers and administrators of Burrford. They write laws, conduct censuses, record events, and so on. It is said, that if something has been written down, the Scribes of the Keepers have it filed somewhere. The Keepers make their home in the expansive in the Frostholme Archives on the second floor of the city.
  • Leader: Master Inker Kivi Forgeheim

The Guild of Mongers

Burrford is a place of many forges. Nowhere in the city is there a place where one can get away from the sound of hammers ringing on anvils. With all that clanging production, there needs to be a guild to govern it. The Guild of Mongers govern all forms of production (other than drink or magic, that is) in the city. They control the pricing, quality, and distribution of everything that rolls out of the forges of the city.
  • Leader: Kilnkeeper Takka Gildenhammer

The Iron Guard

The royal guard of the Royal House of Frostiron. This elite faction of warriors will stop at nothing to keep the city and the royal family safe from threats both within and without the city.
  • Leader: Mistress of Pykes Helmi Thunderkin

Natural Resources

The city sits atop a large reserve of rare minerals and metals. Gems, precious metals, iron, coal, and more are said to be hauled out in from the depths of the city's lower levels.
