Four pilgrims are hired by the Unma Dwen, High Priestess of the Saebian Temple, to recover the temple's missing sacred stone in time for Sekora Festival, an important Vahnist holiday marking the beginning of spring. The pilgrims track, torture, and kill three sugrans (who had stolen the stone) across the plains of Saebia and return it to the High Priestess the night before the festival.

Four pilgrims who shared a berth on the Senu-II to Chellok hear some ear-grapping gossip at their vessel's welcome dinner held at the Saebian Temple. Without jobs or friends, and looking to make a powerful ally, the pilgrims approach the temple's High Priestess, Unma Dwen, and offer their services in finding and retrieving the sacred stone missing from the temple since the previous night. The pilgrims are hired by the priestess.

Based on a lead, the pilgrims track a group of sugrans suspected of having stolen the stone across the plains of Saebia to some old sugran ruins. The pilgrims surround the campsite, set up an ambush, and confront the sugrans, who are wary of an unknown human speaking broken sugranese in a strange accent (T'lios Raga).

The pilgrims then attack and torture the sugrans, who relinquish the sacred stone. The pilgrims then murder the sugrans. One, whom Nama Bi'ilu blinded with her beam weapon, was executed in order that he/she? not report what happened to anyone who might come looking for them.

Hurrying even through night hours, the pilgrims return the stone to the High Priestess on the last day of winter, 24/15/23HE, just in time for the Sekora Festival the following day. This earns the pilgrims great favor with Unma Dwen, and some local fame and reputation.

In return for their service to the temple, the pilgrims afforded the privelege of undergoing the ritual of avowal with the high priestess, an honor usually reserved for members of temple. As part of the ritual, the pilgrims pray to the eternal flame together, and then avow their misdeeds and shame to the high priestess in private.
