Elder
An Elder is the colloquial term for the chosen leader of a village within The Disputed Lands. An Elder is sometimes considered to be the dictatorial leader, although often they are informed by a small council or make their decisions via input by the residents of their village.
Appointment
While selection methods differ from village to village, Elders are usually chosen for their generosity and care for their fellow villagers. Some Elders are chosen by election, while others are unanimously decided upon by the village.
Elders, when chosen, have no choice but to accept the position. A person who is chosen as Elder but rejects the appointment is banished.
