Currency in Chronala

  • The Western ("Civilized") Lands (Dumas Empire1 , Kingdom of Arcadia, and Stone Forge, Independent Kingdoms2)
    • Silver standard ( that is to say, most commoners will use Silver or Copper rather than Gold)
    • Platinum Piece = "Royals" - platinum coins are very rarely seen outside of larger cities such as Inth'Mall or Arcadia City.
    • Gold Pieces = "Crowns", aka "Dragons"
    • Silver Pieces = "Talents"
    • Copper Pieces = "Penny"
    • Same exchange rate as in the PHB
      • 10 Pennies = 1 Talent
      • 10 Talents = 1 Crown
      • 5 Crowns = 1 Royal

  • Eastern Continent (Fey Lands, Kryn Dynasty, Protectorate of Edrinn, The Wilds)
    • Same as above for exchange rate and standards but different names
      • Platinum (virtually unused and very rare) = "Imperial Royal" (only minted in the West which is why it's rarely seen in the East)
      • Gold = "Dragon" - again only minted in the West so still rather rare here
      • Electrum = "Half-Dragon" - since gold is rare here, the Protectorate of Edrinn mints a hybrid coin of gold mixed with silver - it's worth 1/2 a Gold, or 5 Silver
      • Silver (no nickname, just called silver)
      • Copper = "Jots"

1 The Dumas Empire has begun experimenting with the concept of "paper money" but so far only within the capital city of Inth'Mall.

Banks within Inth'Mall can exchange coin for paper notes of equal value which are specially made to prevent counterfeiting, such as special watermarks and materials that are not typically available to the average citizen. Likewise, these notes can be exchanged for goods and services within the city since any bank in the city will exchange the notes for the appropriate equivalent in coins -- for a small fee of course.

2 The Independent Kingdoms utilize the same exchange rate, however each city-state mints its own coins, although they do mostly accept each others currency. It should be noted that Platinum is as rare in the Independent Kingdoms as it is on Eastern Continent as these independent city-states no longer have the same kind of wealth they once did under the Alengor Dynasty.
