Session 8 – Factions of Cynidecea
General Summary
Waking from a long rest, Feebs is shocked to find himself in a coffin with a mummy, which of where Sylbella and Gunkyn left him thinking it the safest place. That shock aside, Sylbella and Gunkyn bring Feebs up to speed with having met the second of the three factions – the Magi of Usimagaras – and the unfortunate turn that meeting took.
After a quick breakfast from the rations, they continue their exploration of the ziggurat coming first upon a room with three white apes. Being a Firbolg , Sylbella is able to calm the beasts and three leave them be.
Shortly after, the group encounters a wandering group of Magi who immediately recognize them and exclaim, “It’s the heretics!” and “It’s the Green Witch!”. The battle is short as the Magi prove no match for the three.
The group next enters a room containing a mummy guarded by several animated skeletons. Deciding that’s not a fight worth fighting, they quickly close the door and leave them be.
The next room they find, like so many others on this level contains a sarcophagus, this time upon a dais with a brass jar on each corner, the brass jars each with a flame dancing above. A search of the room finds no treasure, but a small brass tube is located within which is found a parchment upon which is drawn a partial map. Moreover, Sylbella is able to determine that there are actually a couple of parchments stuck together which she expertly separates using her tools and skills in archeology.
To her surprise and excitement, the other parchment, though faded, is very possibly one of the missing pages from the Catalogus Artium !
Leaving this room by a different door than from which they entered they somehow trigger a trap of sorts, but one easily avoided as they easily see and get out of the way of the huge boulder that begins rolling from north to south down the corridor.
Following the boulder leads them to a now blocked corner of the hallway. Near that corner they decide to enter another room with, yet again, another coffin! This one bejeweled and the room occupied by a huge carrion crawler, which they are able to overcome but not before Gunkyn is temporarily poisoned by the creature.
The jewels in the coffin are easily pried out and worth a tidy sum, but oddly the body within only has upon it a set of Thieves’ Tools leaving Feebs to ponder how and why someone would be entombed with such tools inside such a richly decorated box.
