Spearmen

Spearmen are the most common type of military infantry in Solia. Regardless of the organization they belong to, spearmen are the lowest-ranking and least-trained members of the infantry.

Composition

Manpower

A typical group of spearmen consists of 10-50 individuals, typically conscripted by local nobility.

Equipment

A typical spearman is clad in minimal protection, with no armor and a simple shield.

Weaponry

The spearman carries a long spear and had only rudimentary training in its use.

Tactics

Standing shoulder-to-shoulder, shields raised for defense, the spear wall is the meat-and-potatoes of most infantry divisions. Spears are presented when the unit closes into range with enemy units, but most spearmen are not expected to survive a prolonged engagement.

Training

The pointy end goes in the other guy.

Spearmen undergo rudimentary training, learning to march in a line, to raise a shield for defense, and to thrust the pointed edge of their spears into the enemy. Spearmen who survive exposure to mounted cavalry learn to brace spears against a cavalry charge.
