Myrna

Myrna is an ancient Amazonian city found within the Madeci Islands. It is known for it's combat training and housing the Oracles of Myneranine and Amagus. It is also the home of the Amazons who rule the city to this day.

Demographics

Much of the city finds itself to be lower class, due to nobility not wishing to share the cursed bloodline of Amazonians. The majority of the population are Amazonians, while a substantial amount of the population are also humans and, surprisingly, tieflings. Indeed, the tieflings find Myrna to be a great place to live, as they are fellow cursed folk like the Amazons.   The highest class are those in religious authority, for they rule the city and determine taxes and laws. Often times, these priests are wealthy Amazonian women who enforce laws of matriarchy.

Government

Myrna is a city within the Kingdom of Madeci, which means it would usually be ruled by a Prince, but instead Myrna has kept it's tradition of their Oracle being in charge of the city. Indeed, Myrna remains a theocracy, and one that enforces it's rule of law by brute force within the streets. It is not a surprise to see Amazonian soldiers patrolling through day and knight to ensure nobody is law breaking. It is also not a surprise that they work hard on suppressing dangerous, cult-like behaviors. Every once in a while they will hold public burning for witches and warlocks they find within the city walls.   The laws are matriarchal, down to head of household laws. The mother is seen as the house owner in Myrna, not the man, and therefore is often responsible for the taxes and the public forums. There are men within power, of course, but often many are Potean in descent and are not treated very well, but are wealthy enough that this does not stop them from influencing public forums and law-making.

History

The exact reasons for the city being established is unknown, but Madecian chroniclers have found earliest traces to it's establishment being around the year First Age 830. They believe their founder was a king named Amazonas. From verbal tradition, the bards of Myrna claim that the island was always militaristic in tradition, and was ruled by a ferocious blue dragon for centuries. This dragon was overthrown during the Revolution of Faraway. To celebrate their freedom due to their war goddess, the Myrnans built the Temple of Mynerarine around the year 1100. Mynerarine (actually Morganine) then blessed the Amazonians, giving them strength beyond normal humans.
An Amazonian, given her height and strength by Mynerarine's blessing.
However, the growing power of Potea, another city state, began to influence the men of Myrna in 1140. The men of Mryna began to see the appeal of Amagus, who taught philosophy and discovery instead of war tradition. The women of the island viewed the men as growing progressively weaker. Then, one month in 1150, the women of Myrna went and massacred the men of their island in a fury. They had hoped to gain favor of Mynerarine, but instead brought the wrath of Amagus. Amagus cursed the women of Myrna to never have male offspring again, thus destroying the male line of Amazo.   For a generation, the island of Myrna saw itself in decline, growing more and more destitute and weak due to the aging of the matriarchs while the young women remained hopeless for marriage. In 1160, the Poteans, led by their general Helikos, thus conquered the island. Yet Helikos had mercy on the women, giving them Potean husbands in hopes of revitalizing their island. While Helikos turned the island to Amagus worship, his plan to revitalize the population of Myrnan men failed: the curse of Amagus remained, as the Amazonians could only birth girls.
Queen Minerva II of Myrna was seen as the most beautiful woman in the world for decades in antiquity. This would lead to a war between the Madeci and Tallians to marry her.
Evidently, the Amazons remained low in population and accepted their own fate. Many high class Madeci men did not wish to marry into families into Amazonians to ensure their patriarchal bloodline. Thus the island of Myrna became home to lower-class individuals, and further declined for generations. Yet this was changed by the year 1290, when the Amazonians re-established as a matriarchal monarchy on their island and crowned Minerva II their queen. Legend said that Minerva was the most beautiful woman in the world, to the point where the kings of Madeci and Tallia did not care about her curse. A war erupted in 1300 between Potea and Lontitano on which king would marry her. By 1320, Queen Minerva was unfortunately assassinated, leading the city to once again fall to disgrace.   Yet this was not the end of Myrna. Even though the queen was killed, the island adopted a theocracy in a desperate attempt to keep things stabilized. The Oracle of Amagus thus became the head of government. Myrna for the next few hundred years would become an island where even Potean philosophers would visit for wisdom, and the mighty Tallians would take Amazonian warfare and soldiers to supply their own armies. Myrna rose again to glory, being remembered for it's history and giving the Amazons a proud name.

Geography

Myran is a relatively flat island that gets a lot of rainfall to gain water supply. Palm trees litter the streets and stones peak from the cliff sides to give the island a near-paradise look. It is immensely tropical like the rest of Madeci.
The Oracle of Amagus is the ruler of the city, enforcing a theocratic way of life in contrast to the other cities of Madeci.
