Mystborn

Once a Mystborn is freed from the Shadow Realm, they are free to release their shadows.
The Mystborn are species of sentient mist, created as the protectors and arbiters of the Realm of Shadows by Boldur. However, they soon betrayed their purpose in service of Morganine, and now serve as vile warlords within the ruins of the Shadow Realm that they created. They are envious creatures, desiring nothing else but power, hoping one day to usurp the powers that be and rule the Shadow Realm themselves.   Playing a Mystborn (click here!)

Alignment. Once the Mystborn were moral arbiters of the Shadow Realm, but have fallen to jealousy and vice. Many Mystborn find themselves veering toward lawfulness and especially evil. However, not all are so blinded by jealous desire, and remember their purpose.   Armor of the Mystborn. You automatically start off with a set of Mystborn armor, a set of heavy armor, which you are proficient in and requires no strength requirement for your race. The AC for this armor is 16, and it is sealed quite tightly. You also gain proficiency in heavy armor.   Gaseous Nature. If you leave your armor (or are otherwise removed from it), you go under the effects of the spell Gaseous Form, and remain your form until you can either return to the armor or find a new set of armor that can accommodate your body. However, you cannot go underwater unless your gaseous form is sealed tightly in armor or a container.   Magic of the Mysts. You know the cantrip Gust. At 3rd level, you can cast the spell Fog Cloud once without using a spell slot. Once you cast it, you can't do so again until you finish a long rest. Your intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.

Subrace: Hand of the Schemer

The Mystborn who scheme are ones who integrate powers of their own into their allies. Often they are sly-bodied compared to the rest of their race, and appear almost bug-like in the way their armor is shaped.   Hand of Mist. You learn the cantrip Mage Hand. This does not count against the amount of cantrips you can know. You can channel touch or self spells through this misty hand, using the hand to touch a creature and give them the effect of the spell. In addition, at 10th level you learn the spell Bigby's Hand which does not count against the number of spells you know. You can cast Bigby's Hand without using a spell slot once per long rest. Intelligence is your spellcasting ability for these spells.   Mysts of the Hand. If you have the Spellcasting or the Pact Magic class feature, the spells on the Myst of the Hand Spells table are added to the spell list of your spellcasting class.

Their armor is sharp and imposing, colored in dark fashions such as deep purples, reds, or greys.   Mask of the Warlord. You gain a +1 bonus to your Armor Class. In addition, you learn the spells Thaumaturgy and Cause Fear which does not count against your cantrips and spells known. You can cast Cause Fear without using a spell slot once per long rest. Basic Information

Anatomy

Mystborns are creatures with no defining physical shape, for they are made of watery gas. They somehow retain sentience this way. To find a form, they often inhabit suits of armor or hallowed statues. Otherwise, what they look like is entirely up to whatever they use to find physicality. This can include armors for dwarves, elves, men, dragonborn, whatever suits their taste. Usually, however, such armor or statues are forms of creatures with four limbs, a torso, and a head, and they prefer bipedal creatures.

Genetics and Reproduction

Mystborn reproduce asexually, through wide-scale osmosis throughout their body. These duplicates, however, are usually unique in themselves, built off experiences of the original which gives them different personalities and quirks.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once a Mystborn is created, it is already a full adult. One of the first things it needs to find, however, is a suit of armor or something that can contain them so they can thrive and use objects. For in their gaseous forms, they cannot move things.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Mystborn eat like any creature. They are omnivorous. They eat by absorbing nutrients from living things or food, leaving husks of whatever they consumed behind instead of their bodies emitting waste.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

Because there are no sexes to mystborn, they technically choose whether they want to decide to emulate males or females of more solid organisms. They often go to the extremes of copying them.

Courtship Ideals

They are incapable of love in the biological sense. However, they are not entirely apathetical. They can be platonic and loyal when times need be, and some Mystborn who utilize their shadow hand grow bonds with their soldiers due to the nature of their supportive magic.

History

When the Shadow Realm was created by Boldur for unknown reasons, the Mystborn were created to be it's inhabitants. They were formless just as the new shadow realm was. However, they had understanding of magic, which allowed them to somehow create armors and statues for themselves to inhabit, and they fed off nutrients.   But what began as fun turned into corruption. As Vanu-Am assigned the Mystborn knights to look after the goddess of war, Morganine, they became influenced by her domain. The Mystborn took up weapons and armor to emulate the knights of the mortal realm of Talamh. Though Vanu-Am told them to be protectors of the Shadow Realm, they lost sight of that mission. Soon, they began to grow jealous of each other's wealth, and began to fight and kill each other for dominance. This spiraled into the Mystborn learning to use terrible war magic to dominate other creatures of the Shadow Realm. They themselves became warlords.
A Mask Tyrant variety of the Mystborn. He brandishes a sword, showing his superiority as a great warlord.
