Identifying Magic Items

Magic items in Cinder are rare and hard to comprehend, even for experienced magicians.

Attunement does not immediately inform the user of the properties of a magical item(although they are still able to use it in most cases), and the identify spell may only help discern the properties of an item, it is not a given.

In order to understand the properties of a magical item a character can spend a long rest studying and researching the item. The player makes an Arcana check, and if they cast the identify spell they gain a plus 10 to the check. The result of the check determines the amount of information the character managed to obtain through experimentation and research. A 10 may result in basic knowledge, 15 in adequate, and 20 in near complete understanding and even discovery of basic curses. Very complex magical items may require even further research to discern their properties.
