Stowing and Drawing Weapons

It should matter what weapons you are always ready with, or if someone sprung a trap on you when you didn't have your sword drawn. I like other systems utilizing the move action as something that is a bit more versatile, so these rules here are my own rules for drawing and stowing weapons when in combat:

At the beginning of combat, unless previously stated, it is assumed your character does not have a weapon drawn. Drawing or stowing a weapon in combat costs half of your movement action.

Examples of use:
  • At the beginning of combat, my character does not have his sword drawn. He draws his sword, and his previously 30ft of movement becomes 15ft because some of that time is spent readying his weapon.
  • After fighting for a while, one of the enemies goes flying away. I still have my sword drawn, but I need my bow. I spend half of my movement sheathing my sword, and half of my movement drawing my bow. This leaves me with no movement action, but the ability to use my action and bonus action with my bow.
One of the primary reasons for this rule is that it forces the players to make more tactical decisions about the importance of what weapons to use, carry, and in combat whether it would be better to move or switch to a different weapon.
