Sebastian Tevestra
Sebastian Tevestra
Sebastian grew up the son of the Na’vi Blacksmith, Eric Tevestra. To Sebastian, his father seemed like
any dull, ordinary person, but he had no idea how rare it was for a Na’vi to be permitted training in
metalwork. Refining metal and shaping it was considered a perversion of the natural order. Those that
were granted the honor were often the only ones permitted contact and trade with other races and
lands.
Despite never having been outside of the Pandora region, Sebastian always felt the strong pull to travel.
This pull grew to its Zenith one fateful day when a Paladin of the Silver Hand showed up in his father’s
shop. He had grown accustomed to the dull representatives from the Resource Development
Administration in the center of the country, but this man was magnificent to behold. He wore armor of
steel and gold that was polished to such a mirror shine that it actually seemed to radiate its own light.
He knew right away, this was his calling.
The Paladin, Uther, spent several days with the Tevestras while his weapon was being repaired and
discussion was had about a possible commission. Anytime Uther was separate from Eric, Sebastian
would be there, gleefully observing everything he did and asking him any and all questions that came
into his mind. The childlike enthusiasm often got a chuckle from Uther. At night, Sebastian would dream
of himself in the armor, fighting monsters, protecting the people, and worshipped by all. Nothing at all
like his boring life as a blacksmith.
The next three years were trying times for Sebastian. He knew his father would never approve of him
leaving, but it was going to happen. In secret, he would send and retrieve letters from Uther. Finally,
just before his 18th birthday, he received exactly what he had been looking for all this time: his letter of
recommendation to begin training with the Silver Hand.
Barely able to contain his excitement for the next few days, Sebastian was ill-prepared for the
confrontation with his parents. He had expected yelling, possibly even a physical altercation, from his
father and crying from his mother. What he got instead was sadness and disappointment from his
father while his mother packed up a sack without so much as a word or glance towards him. Uncertain
how to react, he set in with his planned statements about the waste of a life that smithing was and how
his father never desired for more. It was a statement made from youthful arrogance and he regretted it
immediately, but it was too late to take it back. His regret was made even worse when his mother
handed him the pack she had been making and tenderly draped a cloak over his soldier, tears held back
in her eyes. This moment would be a central point of reflection during his long trip to the Bastion of the Silver Hand.
Over the next twelve years, Sebastian would progress through the ranks from page, to Man-at-Arms, to
squire, and, finally, Knight of the Silver Hand. During that time, the world had begun to undergo a great
change that was almost entirely precipitated by Waltenburg’s sudden desire for control. At first, it was
just reports that Emperor Walther, the founder of Waltenburg, had been seen again after nearly a
millennia of presumed death. With him came also the Mouseketeers, his elite guard and one person
armies. Their presence was always a sign of war, famine, disease, and death. First noticed in the 616
Conglomerate, that land quickly fell to a Waltenburg assault, the fall of the Council of Balance would be
more subtle and controlled. The last conquest came just before his graduation date when Waltenburg
seemingly struck a deal with the RDA in Vulpine lands when RDA forces marched into Pandora to meet
Waltenburg in combat. The fighting ended after only a few hours with surrender to Waltenburg.
The Silver Hand had been monitoring the situation in the north with growing concern. This was why
Uther expedited Sebastian’s graduation and dispatched him to return home in order to report on the
situation with more detail. He would head out ahead of a full retinue in the hopes of heading off
misfortune. The decision was made too late though as Sebastian made it home days after the fighting
had ended.
The sight that greeted him was horrific. Bodies, charred and broken, were being picked apart by
scavengers. Homes were decimated or reduced to ash, though possessions seemed to remain. Fearing
the worst, Sebastian rushed to his parent’s home. Wild-eyed and frantic, he turned over every piece of
furniture and debris. He found no sign of his mother or sister, but he found his father cut down in near
his forge clutching a small amulet of the Hometree. He was uncertain what it would mean yet, but he
knew his father would not have clutched it so tightly if it was not of extreme importance.
According to tradition, Sebastian spent the day burying his father after he claimed the pendant. After
following the rites, it was time to find the real object that his father had protected to the end. It would
be hidden in plain sight, but only if you knew what to look for. Sebastian hunted through the murals on
the wall until he found a spot that was marked exactly as the tree on the pendant. Once he found it, he
pressed the pendant to the spot and pushed the tree out from the back. Once he heard the click, his
hand turned the mechanism that had been created. Doing so, a section of the wall recessed into the
wall and slid out of the way. Inside was a box almost as long as he was tall and that had a sealed
envelope with Sebastian’s name attached to it.
Hesitantly, Sebastian took the envelope and broke the seal to reveal a letter. Carefully, he unfolded the
letter and began to read it.
Son, I know we parted ways on horrible terms, but I wanted you to know that I have always been proud of you and the path you chose to walk. Though you thought I was unaware of your plans, I had been watching since you were young and knew you would never follow in my footsteps. That is why I had sent for the Silver Hand. I had encountered them in the capital years before and felt it would give you the best chance to fulfill your desires and destiny at the same time. If I had to part with you, I felt it best to do so with someone that was trustworthy. Uther was sent here to observe you under the guise of commissioning a holy weapon for a member of the order. After Uther had decided that he would accept you, upon your 18th birthday, he commissioned the weapon that would harmonize your heritage with your training from the order. Thus, I began crafting Incliti as a gift for your graduation and as a reminder that you carry your home with you, wherever you may go. With all the love a father can grant, EricThe realization that Sebastian’s father had never actually been upset with his choice made his shoulders slump, especially once it set in that he would never have the chance to apologize. Tenderly, he removed the lid from the box and revealed his father’s final masterpiece. The entirety of the hilt, from pommel to guard, was formed from a living piece of the Hometree that had been tended in order to display as the tree itself. From the guard sprang a gleaming blade that had a rose vine stretching its length, the buds still closed. It was truly a representation of the two halves of his soul joined as one. Renewed determination in his heart, Sebastian began to tend to the other dead in the town. Three days into the process, a messenger from the Silver Hand came to relay a message. The other Paladins had set up a temporary operating base about two days travel south after having set free a caravan containing Na’vi among other people from Vulpine. His family was not among them. They were being transported to the south by the RDA. His presence was requested as soon as possible. Sebastian thanked the messenger and relayed that he would set out in two days after he finished burying the dead. As promised, Sebastian began the journey to the temporary base two days later. Halfway there, an RDA patrol group stopped him for questioning. During the interrogation, a member he had not seen before struck him from behind and knocked him unconscious. When he awoke, Sebastian found himself in shackles being transported in a cage. While he couldn’t be certain of his exact location, he could determine that they were heading south just like the other caravans. Even though he could have likely broken himself free, he decided that this may be the best course to find out where his people were being taken and why. He counted the days it took to get to the small town that they unloaded him at. What struck him as odd was that the town had virtually no visible military presence and seemed to hold almost no strategic value. His cell was on the first floor of a twostory stone building and kept separate from the others he was brought with. He spent the first few days studying the surroundings from his cell, learning the guard’s rounds, trying to formulate a plan to get his gear and escape with as little commotion as possible. The possibility of gathering information or locating other survivors also couldn’t be underestimated. His plans were disrupted on the third day when the guards began to talk of something creeping around in the shadows. They didn’t talk like it was a person, but more like the shadow had come to life. At first, he chalked it up to bored guards sharing campfire stories to scare each other, but then he started to notice their demeanor change. When watching the town at night, he would also catch a glimpse of something big moving along the tops of the buildings. After two days of observation, he got his first glimpse of it in person. The guards hadn’t completed their normal rounds that morning and he even observed a few of them slink off towards the town. Then, as the night began to set, one of the guards came bursting into the holding area before scrambling to grab his keys to open the empty cell next Sebastian’s. Just as his was about to put the key in the lock, a black, spike-like object pierced through his stomach from the back and he lifted from the ground. Like a ragdoll, he was then tossed to the side and his assailant became visible. The creature easily stood over two meters tall despite being hunched over slightly. Its head was long, shiny, and black but had no sign of eyes. Whipping around behind it was a bony tail that ended with a now bloody barb. Though he had been trained to fight monsters, this thing was different. Sebastian couldn’t help but take a couple of steps backwards at the sight of it. Every step was observed curiously by the creature…until he backed against the wall. As soon as he contacted the stones and startled himself, it lunged towards him. Lucky for him, the bars of his cell held fast, though bent inwards. Angry, it took off back into the heart of the building. His plan would have to be revised if he were to escape. The creature would have to be taken into account and, as his observations over the next few days showed, it was considerably more problematic than even an entire squadron of guards. Then the fates dealt him another cruel twist. One night, while watching the creature move through the town, a strange dome of energy went up over the entirety of the town. A few moments later, a voice filled the air. “Decon Terminus, on order of Nodge-Gill, surrender yourself to us. We have encapsulated the town in an impenetrable energy dome and you cannot escape. If you do not comply within the next six hours, we will eradicate this town and everyone inside of it.” Sebastian had no knowledge of either of these people, but it did add one more layer of complications to his life.
