Lars Bloodsword

Sometime shortly after sunset, first-time visitors to The Lusty Minotaur may notice a sense of anticipation hovering over the common room, and may overhear regulars speculating on when "the first show of the night" will begin. They're not talking about dancing girls or a traveling musician, though. They're talking about Lars Bloodsword. Sometime after dark, the swordsman will stride through the front door and issue his challenge: 50 gold to any man who can beat him in a contest of arms. If there are multiple challengers, Lars will tell them, "I've only got one fight in me tonight. Decide among yourselves who it'll be. I'll be at the bar when he's ready." At that point, in a script well-known to regular patrons, the barman will step in and suggest that the challengers duel one another to see who gets the honor of fighting Lars. From there, lots are drawn to determine pairings, house odds are announced, and the Minotaur staff busies itself with taking in bets on the outcome of both the preliminary duels and the main event (it's generally assumed that Lars takes a share of the betting profits for his part in the scheme). Eventually, the fighters move out to the courtyard and the fights begin. More often than not, Lars keeps his gold, a fact he traditionally celebrates by buying a round for the house.
