Jane Lahey- Lewis

Dear Diary,   Born in the year 1926, my early years unfolded in the embrace of Tasmania, a land that cradled me with its rugged beauty and whispered secrets. The small village near Hobart witnessed the adventures of a curious girl destined for a life intricately woven with the threads of mystery and resilience.   In my youth, I formed unbreakable bonds with Thelma Jeffries and Bob Gangley. Our friendship, nurtured amid the Tasmanian rainforest, transcended time and became the foundation of a lifetime of shared laughter and exploration. Nature became my sanctuary, and the woods were our canvas for secrets and discoveries.   As life unfolded, I encountered James Jeffries, a man who would weave himself into the tapestry of my story. Through twists of fate and the paradox of introducing Thelma to James, love blossomed in unexpected corners. Our trio, bonded by friendship, embarked on countless escapades, each revealing new facets of our shared connection.   The 1940s witnessed profound changes. I met Patrick Lahey, a kindred spirit whose love mirrored the ebb and flow of Tasmanian tides. Our union was blessed with the arrival of our four children, Nicholas, Fiona, Solomon, and Pip. Parenthood became a new chapter, enriching our lives with the laughter and joys of a growing family.   Amid the familial bliss, my involvement with the Jeffries took a complex turn. Secrets and mysteries emerged, and my relationship with James Jeffries extended beyond the ordinary. Our shared ventures in the local Tasmanian community became the backdrop of clandestine activities, woven into the fabric of our daily lives.   The post-war era ushered in a period of quiet community service. My work in Tasmania became a testament to resilience, with my involvement in local initiatives revealing layers that only time could uncover. As the years rolled on, my love for nature persisted, and the rainforest walks with Thelma and Bob continued to be a source of solace and joy.   1998 was a sorrowful chapter, as tragedy struck our family. My daughter Pip and her husband Greg met a tragic end overseas, leaving their children, Sarah and Oscar, orphaned at a young age. In the wake of this devastating loss, Patrick and I, with hearts heavy with grief, welcomed Sarah and Oscar into our home. The laughter of grandchildren became a bittersweet melody, filling the void left by their parents' untimely departure.   In the early 2010s, my beloved Patrick bid farewell, leaving a void that time could not erase. Yet, the camaraderie of Thelma, Bob, and the vibrant Hobart community provided a comforting embrace. The shadows of the past lingered, and as I find myself in the confines of a nursing home, facing a cancer diagnosis, I know my remaining days are numbered. The pages of my life, turned by time and circumstance, continue to reveal the intricate tale of a woman who, against the backdrop of Tasmania, embraced the mysteries of a life well-lived.
